Default Synthetic Motor Oil Discussion

I have been using mobil 1 5w 30 synthetic which is what the engine calls for 5w 30. I noticed every thousand miles my engine burns alittle bit of oil so that the oil level on the dip stick reads half way between low and high. I was wondering if I switch to 10w 30 would that fix the problem.

Its normal for the engine to burn the oil bro... thats why ppl that has turbo's have to top up their oil very often. Changin to 10w30 wont make a change.. itll still burn.

The number before the W [which stands for winter] represents the viscosity of the oil in the low temp or the winter temp for the engine to start.

My girls X5 does the same thing. We usually have to add a bottle for her to get thru between changes which is about 7-10k based on factory recommendations.

When i checked the FX, i was a bit lower before my last change than i expected. I'm tempted to think its semi normal.

hey man mobil 1 shears off fast resulting from 30 weight to 25 or even 20 those numbers are too low for any VQ.
no one uses them in the subaru crowd [only the ones that do not know]... so use it at your own will...

Every vehicle does this ... suv's more than regular cars -- so dont be scared lol.. just top it off to keep your self going to get thru the 7000 miles before your next oil change.

On 6thGen, someone did some big research and discovered Mobil1 wasn't a true synthetic, just a HIGHLY purified dino oil with some synthetic. Never checked on it myself, but it brought to light pennzoil platinum and a few others, so I made a switch. I've been running that and she's been running great with no real noticeable loss.

been running Mobil 1 5w-30 EP (extended) since it came out for 7500 changes. Have been deciding on whether to extend them to 10-12,000 (once a year) since warranty is about up.

in my research I've decided to stick with 7500 but more importantly the huge acclaim for Mobil 1 0w-40 for the VQ. just ordered a case off amazon with a $12 rebate. our VQ is rough on 5w-30 like stated. I noticed more burn-off than you this last 7500. Have topped off 1.5 quarts.

In a somewhat related question, is there anything special that should be done to switch oil viscosity, i.e. switching from 10w30 to 5w30?

Not they I've ever heard.

I suppose if you wanted to be real thorough, you could add the new oil, drive around for a good 10-20mi and then do another change.
