Default How To Know If Strut Is Bad When Its Removed?

I removed the back struts and was told that when you press down, how fast is spits back up is how you tell if strut is still good or not. Is this true because every strut i have taken off has a super slow recoil time.

it sounds like you need to replace them. a good shock takes pressure to push down and comes back up by itself. a worn out shock can be easily pressed down and takes forever to come back up.

Yup what he said. Takes some pressure to push in and comes out on it's own. If it doesn't and also if you hear noise while pushing it in, it's bad.

This is my advice, if your car is over 50K and never had the struts/shocks replaced, go ahead and do so, since you have them out anyway. Another thing, make sure you replace all 4 corners at once or your car will ride funny.

OEM shocks/struts are typically rated for 50K miles. If you have any more than that, it isn't going to hurt to replace them...other than your wallet!

how fast is it supposed to come back up to know if its good? most of the struts I take off are semi easy to push and take a good 10 second to come back up. is it supposed to shoot back up or a slow but steady raise?

You are pretty much going to be limited to either Monroe Sensa-Tracs, or KYB GR-2...there aren't a whole lot available for us. Either one is a good choice. If you are after a little more sporty...GR-2. If you are after comfort...Sensa-Trac. Just my opinion...

Those have been replaced then, otherwise, that shop doesn't know what they are talking about.

If they are the OEM shocks/struts, they may not be leaking, but I'd replace them. Trust me, at 130K miles, they are worn out.

You that's what I was thinking because I know they haven't been replaced. He went around and bounced all 4 corners and said they were all fine, and no leaks "This car must have had a lot of highway miles". (It has)

So for now I guess I just save up a little each month, maybe replace next spring or something. Weird

Anything is possible. What typically happens is that they just degrade little by little over time, unless you have a blowout. The rate of degradation is so low, that you just don't notice it. I'm guessing that you will be amazed when you replace them, at the difference in ride quality.

Shop quoted me about $800 for eveything. On the serious side, yeah I got that on my list to do. They need to be replaced, probably in the spring. I just use OEM again.

Default Re: How To Know If Strut Is Bad When Its Removed?

I just wanna share what my mechanic said about gas struts to me. I really beleive in his experience. He had worked on far worse cars that you could possibly imagine. He said there are two conditions(not necessarily simultaneous) that you should change your struts:
1- You see Oil leakage
2- You compress and expand the strut manually and compare the amount of force you needed to compress and expand the shock. If the amount of forces is not equal then you have a bad strut.(and this is true for both gas or normal hydraulic struts)

I have seen lots of different gas struts and beleive me they all become numb after a while(and by that I mean fair amount of usage) recoiling and getting back to their expanded position. and there is a good reason for that. Water, dust and even tiny rocks and debris find their way into the chambers of the shock and make it harder for the shock to recoil back out. The only gas strut I have ever seen that recoiled after 7years of usage was a Peugeot 206 strut (for those who possibly don't know what Peugeot 206 is, it's a french car) and I was amazed by that. Maybe they had put more gas in it

Another way is to bounce the front or back of the car. If you bounce the right front of the car and it drops quickly but rebounds a couple of times, then you definitly need to replace. It works for almost all types of shocks/struts and can be done at any corner of the vehicle. Just dont push on your fender otherwise it might collapse.

Yep, I will replace mine with Monroe Sensa Trac, found a shop nearby that will install all 4 and align the car for around $250.

Question: Monroe 906914 Strut-Mate Mounting Kit $37 should I replace those at the same time? I am inclined to have them done.

^^^^ Anyone?^^^ I think there is a bearing in the mount. I'll probably just do those at the same time.
