Default Automatic Transmission Fluid Types

2004 Nissan Maxima SL ATF Requirements Matic D 4 Speed Automatic

2004 Nissan Maxima SE ATF Requirements Matic K 5 Speed Automatic

2005 Nissan Maxima SE and SL ATF Requirements Matic K 5 Speed Automatic

2006 Nissan Maxima SE and SL ATF Requirements Matic K 5 Speed Automatic

4 Speed Automatic vs 5 Speed Automatic

4 Speed Pros:
  • Nissan made transmission for years
  • Descent Reliable
4 Speed Cons:
  • Only 4 gears/long first and second gear
  • Slow responding transmission
  • Slower Shifts
5 Speed Pros:
  • 5 Gears vs 4 Gears
  • Manual shift gate
  • Faster shift times
  • Response times improved
5 Speed Cons:
  • Transmission is not fully made by Nissan
  • Volvo made various parts
  • Torque converter + Clutch packs prematurely failing
  • Overheating problems Especially fluid temps
Maintenance

4 Speed: Transmission service every 30,000 miles (drain and fill 3-5 times) OR once a year.

5 Speed: Transmission service every 15,000 miles (drain and fill 3-5 times) OR once a year.

During drain and fill between 3-4 quarts of fluid comes out.

NOTE: The 5 speeds are known to have various problems the ATF takes too much beating from the various parts inside (clutch packs & torque converter) And along with overheating which causes strain and stress on the ATF!!!

ATF life is shortened thus causing the color and smell to change from red/pink to dark red/brown/black.

If you let your color change this much it is a ticking bomb to blow....as in your transmission will not last!!!

DO IT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
If your over 60,000 miles and never changed it. well bad news for you sir your transmission will die in a matter of few thousand miles......

If your into making your "maxima" faster make sure you check these before you get stranded.

Synthetic ATF lasts more during extreme conditions and does not break down easily under stress and Track/Racing/Heavy Loads

Alternatives
Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluids
  • Mobil 1
  • Amsoil
If your thinking of switching over you must get rid of your dirty/oem fluid most of it atleast!

5-8 Drain and Fills
