Default Premium Gas Question

I just recently bought my Maxima and the gas cap door says Premium fuel is recommended for maximum performance, but in the owners manual, it calls for an octane rating of 87 or higher, which is regular. And I know just about all fairly new cars have knock sensors that prevent pinging as long as you don't mash the gas at every green light. So really, do our Maximas need Premium fuel other that the fact of getting a little more power?

I run mid grade with no problem. If you read the sticker it says "recomended".

I would never use 87. Never less than the mid grade 89. For me personally, when I bought my car all I used was 91. Gas kept going up and up and I was driving over 100 miles a day. I switched to mid-grade just to try to save a few bucks. I have to be honest, I never noticed a difference in performance what so ever.

But I used mid grade up until last week, I out Premium gas in by mistake. But there isn't much difference between mid-grade and premium to me.

gas price has dropped steadily but premium is still relatively high, would switching from v-power to the mid grade gas be THAT bad in the end?

its only a difference of 20-30 cents for premium... might as well pay that and get the added benefits than having to replace an engine..... just my .02.

What's the price difference between mid and premium? Hypothetically lets says 10 cents. 15 gallons, you're talking a difference of a whole $1.50. Is the peace of mind worth $1.50 to you?

The difference in performance is completely unnoticeable to the driver. There is barely a difference between 87 and 93 there really is no need to run anything more than 87. Over the long term the higher grade gas may burn a little bit cleaner but nothing really noticeable.

haha theoretically speaking it's not a lot. but psychologically, we as humans see something cheaper and we instantly feel like we saved a lot even if it is a measly $1.50

but yeah, i probably won't ever use less than premium. i remember with my 94' maxima i had used regular gas a lot and it started breaking down at 97k miles. even though the car was in the family for 13 years, i thought i would be able to push out at least 150k miles lesson learned to say the least

That's my mindset. I blow money on all kinds of things. Gas you have to pay for. Might as well for top of the line.

I'm at 140,xxx miles right now - the best 140,xxx miles of my life.

This is how I was kind of thinking and I actually just filled up my first tank (not on the dealers tab) with regular. I guess one tank wont hurt anything if running regular actually does hurt the engine in the long run.

Wife's TL had 40k miles on it when we bought it. The only time it's seen Premium was when the dealership filled it up, only use mid grade, and now she has 140k on it. Same with my mom's G35 sedan and she's had it since 04, no work done to the engine at all. Plus every month I put some fuel injection cleaner in the tank to make sure it stays clean.

It really is hard to argue with this logic. Becuase in the long run Im sure its worth it.

Default Re: Premium gas question

This question has come up before.
Many members will never use anything less than high octane gas. Others will use regular while some use mid grade.

According to the owners manual (I only know about the 2004 model) our Maximas DO NOT REQUIRE PREMIUM FUEL. It says "Premium Fuel is recommended for Maximum performance".

When I first got my Maxima I used premium fuel exclusively for several weeks. I then switched to regular for a few weeks, then back to premium. I honestly could not tell any difference in performance. I have been using regular ever since. I now have 93,000 miles on the Machine. Still runs like a top and the engine just purrs.

I am relating my experience. Yours may be different.

I owned a Cadillac that required premium fuel and that is what I always used because it required it.

If the car requires it, then use it. If it is only recommended, then do what you feel is best for your Machine.

This is what i was confused about because it does clearly say in the owners manual that it needs an octane rating of 87 or higher, but then on the gas door, it recommends premium.
