Default Oops With the Oops

Decided to start tinting the lense on the mirror turn signal with VHT since i got the new LED's in yesterday. First i had to get off the excess RTV. Picked a cleaner off the shelf in the garage. Went with the "Opps". Sprayed it on and immediately wiped it with a shop towel and went "Fucking Opps". It seems like it started to melt the plastic. I have wet sanded it some with 1000grit and it is smooth BUT you can see my finger prints etched into the lense. Right now the lense has a frosted look but it is not even. Its more frosted in some areas than others. What else can i do besides continue to wet sand?

Wet sand a little more, then maybe hit it with some buffing compound...maybe the stuff in the headlight restoration kits? What color LEDs did you go with?

I ended up hitting the other one with opps too. But in a more controlled manner. Sprayed it on a paper towel and rubbed the lense until it was just as frosted as the other one and washed off immediately in a bowel of water. Then i wet sanded the shit out of both of them. I put opps on the first one again to try and even out the frosting of the lense the best i could. It does not look as good as the other one but it doesn't look bad either. It also fell from the string it was hanging from so i had hit it with some denatured alcohol then wet sand it some more. I got off as much as i could but there were still some spots from where my finger prints were that showed up even though you could not see them before tinting. I have got a trick that I'm going to use so that you do not see the imperfections as much when the LED's are lit. I have also been wet sanding in between coats. Without a clear coat they both appear very glossy.

I went with amber and 6000k white. I put the amber LED's behind the lenses with two coats and they were still bright. One more coat of VHT and they should be good and ready to get the LED's put in them and sealed up. The LED's are going to be set up in a switchback configuration with two rows of amber positioned at the top and bottom and one row of white in the middle between the amber strips. Three rows all together.

I have been useing heat gun to speed up the drying as much as i can but Im not sleeping until these things are lit up, and sealed up and ready to be mounted.

OK, that's what I figured it was. It's just that you put Opps in the title of the thread is why I was asking. No biggie I guess.

Thanks, getting some fresh air while the final clear coat dries. Its a thick coat. It should be very glossy after the final wet sand. The ventilation in there is not adequate by any means. Its a lil windy outside but i have the garage door open almost half way. Any more and the wind would blow my plastic sheeting and blue tape paint room away. Took some more pic's with the EVO.

The sled being sacrificed to aid in the positioning of the LED's. Its 3:30am and I'm not going out to get some high density foam. The sled is made of foam and sometimes you just gotta use what is on hand to make something work.

I have one assembled and ready to be installed. The other is still in clamps while the RTV dries. Only problem left is the lack of carbon fiber that did not come in the mail today. So this will have to wait until the carbon fiber shows up before it goes on the car.

I have never tinted a lense or worked with such tiny LED's before. It would have came out so much better if i had not screwed the first lense up with the Oops and have to intentionally mess the other one up to make it match. If i had not made the match before tinting they would not have looked similar. The arthritis in my fingers have forced me to take frequent breaks so it seems like this took forever.

Gutted the reflector and 5 original LED's out. Pretty much nothing left inside there except for the foam from an old sled and two strips of LED's i put in there. Six white and eighteen amber. As far as wire, I'm improvising with some cat4 telephone wire from the back of my work truck. It was perfect for soldering to the PCB the LED's were on. Going to keep it cat4 until i get to the relay that is going to give the switchback effect then switch to a larger 18-20gauge stranded wire to tap into power at the BCM.

Not my cup of tea. You need to wet sand those and then apply one final coat of clear. Other then that good job.

I haven't done the final buff on the lense yet. Still has the tape residue on them as well. Their going to have tape put on them again when i put on the vinyl wrap. Once the tape comes back off I'm going to hit it with some denatured alcohol on a rag then rinse with water immediately after then do a quick 2000 grit wet sand followed by a polishing compound. They should finish up with a nice gloss.

The one that i messed up with the Oops and fell from the string while painting is going to show its imperfections some because the Oops caused a chemical reaction and started to melt the plastic causing a few stress cracks. But they will not show as much with the lights on because of how close i put the LED's to the lense.

I like to switchback effect. I think I need to hit mine with VHT again, I have some white spots and it's not dirt or lint.

I can not wait until i get this project done. Its been like an Achilles heel to me. My blood sugar bottomed out on me again today and i had to stop after i got the wiring ran on both sides. Spent most of the day attempting to paint the shell pebble beach with some duplicolor paint. Its not an exact match but it is close enough that the average person looking at it will not notice they are half a shade lighter than the rest of the car. First time i have ever painted anything and put alot of effort into it. Only thing left is to find the wires to tap into in the kick panel coming out of the BCU and attach the shell on the mirror housing. Shouldn't take too long once i drag myself out of bed in the morning and drive down to radio shack and pick up a SPDT relay and some diodes. I dunno why i was thinking a SPST relay would do what i wanted it to.
