Default Re: Is It Ok To Leave A Car Sit For 5-6 Months?

While I was working out in Cali. I have my girl start my car at least twice a week. It was the summer time but still. But being as tho it's winter coming up I would say do that because even tho our cars can run and drive in the cold temps it's still a good idea to let the fluids circulate in the car. Oil, gas, coolant those things need to move around. If you don't start it in a week nothing bad will happen, but get in the habit of letting it run for about 10 min or so just to keep things fresh. But you will be fine. Ohhh yeah, also make sure your battery is charged. Cold weather and batteries are common enemies.

Driving it some would help to avoid flat spots in the tires.

When I store some of my cars. I start them every few days and let them run until at normal temperature and turn them off, specially in colder weather.

Yep, this.

To get any benefit, the engine/tranny needs to get to operating temp.

If you have auto start on it.. you could just auto start it for a few minutes twice a week over the next 5-6 months and you'll be good bro. Driving it a few times would be even better.

Blazen, Question: If you have auto start, do you also have "auto Kill"? I had an after market auto start on a car in the 90's, and once you auto started the car, the only way to turn it off was to get in the car and step on the brake or put the key in the ignition and turn the key to "on" then to "off ". Hopefully newer technology allows to remotly kill the engine.

Yea there's auto kill via 2 ways.. either you hit the button on the remote to turn it off or there's usually auto timers so say after 10 minutes, it turns off automatically. That's how they are now.

I've read that just starting the car, letting it idle, and turning it back off is worse for it than just letting it sit. Supposedly you should drive the car, at least around the block, to get everything moving.

Exactly, get it to operating temp. It's a must for long storage.
