Default Daily Driver Weight Reduction

So at my job I am constantly analyzing numbers and have come to love doing the same with my Maxima. I have recently analyzed performance mods vs. cost vs. gains to see what my next mods should be to get the best bang for my buck. In doing this I realized, that if I can reduce the weight in my '04 Max I can essentially do the same thing for less money... MUCH less money.

So my question here requires a lot of thought and I figure who better to ask than you all.

I want to reduce weight in my daily driver '04 Maxima to improve overall performance. I DO NOT want to give up my creature comforts and/or luxurious ride quality to do so. What can be done to remove weight from the vehicle without truly reducing the quality of life I have in my Maxima? EGR removal would be an example...

BTW, I have an '04 Max, 6 speed, with black leather interior, moonroof, power everything, heated everything and a sound system with a 12" Alpine Type R in the trunk I will never let go of...

Please anyone... any thoughts?

sounds like a waste to me if your going to add the weight of a system...but the EGR is a neccessary item, take it out and your going to be shooting all kinda of codes...I would start with the trunk (jack, spare, everything else), but its not a rocket ship, just leave it and add some performance mods here and there...

Intake, NWP Spacers, and Catback are all around $200, and a good bang for the buck...y-pipe a little more (around $260), but also a GREAT mod for the money. Gotta pay to play.

Only way to reduce weight is to get rid of that anchor in the trunk, spare tire, seats...things like that. On a daily, I don't see you doing that plus that would not get you the best bang for your buck, as you put it. Forget weight reduction and focus on other crap, bottom line, this car is heavy and making it pretty will be the best bet for your buck.

I have an Injen cold air intake system, Racingline Y-Pipe and NWP VIAS block off plate. Next on my list would be NWP spacers and UR underdrive pulley because cost vs. gain is higher than most.

Never believed that much HP gain could be expected from Catback exhaust system, plus cost vs. gain is terrible. But the Racingline High flow Pre cats were third on my list.

But along with modding the engine, I was curious to see if there were other items that could be lightened up to further increase gains and performance without any initial cost.

Removing the spare and jack is the best idea to offset weight added by Sub and I removed the Bose 8 inch subs from the rear deck also (now empty holes)... anything else? C'mon think people think

Does the carbon fiber hood add any reduction in weight? I think our hoods are aluminum or something really light...

your ypipe and high flow pre cats are a being heavily restricted by a factory exhaust setup...so the money you spent on them is being wasted. Under $200 shipped to your door isn't cost vs. gain terrible, especially if your running a ypipe and plan on pre-cats. Pulley is a great compliment to other mods, but if you think thats going to get you more cost vs. gain then the catback, your way off.

This is coming from a guy who has had every performance bolt on, so i'm speaking from experience, forget losing 40lbs of weight and do some performance work, or get a car thats actually fast, if thats what your going for.

Our factory hood weighs less then the CF hood made for our cars BTW

Does anyone have any idea how much the cornering light assemblies weigh? These are fairly useless (with a factory bumper) and I wouldn't mind removing them and simply making a plastic insert...

yea, its the greddy knock off, sounds great, fits perfect, great quality, all stainless...I think its like $180 or $190 shipped now.

And leave the cornering lights alone, that 1.5lbs between both is not going to get you anywhere lol.

With that said... the cornering lights are not even close to 100lbs.

Something doesnt go right when saying DAILY DRIVER & WEIGHT REDUCTION??

If you keep doing cost vs gains.. and your getting 1 mod at a time, your eventually gunna get all of them so mind as well just get all the bolt ons and call it a day.

As far as what you have now?... remove spare tire and the jack. Nothing else.. sorry.

Our aluminum hoods are actually lighter than the carbin fiber hood available for the max!

On a side note these items shaved weight off my car, they also improved performance!!!

- CAI ~ Reduces weight of stock air box
- Wilwood BBK ~ Reduces weight of heavy cast OEM brake system
- Catback exhaust ~ Reduces weight of heavy exhaust system and eliminated heavy B-Pipe
- Lightweight Racing Pulley ~ Reduces weight by replacing heavy cast OEM pulley
- Coilovers ~ Reduces weight of heavier OEM shocks and springs
- Headers/Y-Pipe ~ Reduces weight from heavier Precats and Catalytic converter

Downside, COST!!!

And what do you estimate your TOTAL weight savings is here...MAYBE 100 pounds, estimating on the very high side? I would perform those mods for performance, but I would NEVER perform them strictly for weight reduction.

Gary,

I know, what I was getting at is that for the cost of all of those mods, you are not even saving 100 pounds. This IS NOT the car to buy if you are looking to shave weight. Not to mention, the OP said he wants to retain all of the creature comforts and ride quality. Shaving weight means making sacrifices, which he is not willing to do. The Maxima is NOT a drag car, and never will be, it simply weighs too much. If you're looking to gut a car to make it faster, I can think of a lot of much cheaper alternatives.

Any mods that I've EVER done to any of my cars, I've done for the performance gained, NOT the weight saved.

LOL...you can make a 6th gen fast, but not without making some MAJOR sacrifices.

Hence why these cars are not very popular, very limited to what you can do. That's why my advice was to just make it look good, the maxima doesn't lack there but they lack too much in the performance department, first thing that kills that is the FWD. Make it look and sound good and call it a day folks.
