Default 06 Maxima 4-speed Automatic

I have a 06 Nissan Maxima with a 4-speed automatic. Went to replace driver's side cv half axle, but couldn't get the axle removed from the transmission. Was reluctant to pry too hard against the aluminum transmission for fear of cracking the case.

So, I removed the passenger side axle thinking I could punch out the driver's side axle from passenger side... Which turned out not to be the case.

No oil leaked from either side after axle removal, however, thinkning that I could punch out the driver's side axle from the passenger side, I used a long bar and started tapping on what I thought was the dirver's side axle end with a hammer... After a few taps, about 1 quart of transmission fluid came pouring out.

Questions:
1. What did I damage that's between the two driver and passenger's side a axle ends? Reassembled passenger side axle, but fluid is leaking now.
2. Is this easily repaired or do I need to remove transmission, tear down, and repair/replace something?

Start by changing the axle input seals on both sides.

So, here's an update... I put everything back togehter and it seems to run fine. There was transmission fluid all over the trans, engine, and exhaust, so to wipe down several times to make sure there's no leaks. For now, doesn't seem to be leaking.

However, I'm still confused why no oil drained out when I first pulled the passenger side axle, but when I put the bar into the axle hole thinking I could punch the driver side axle out, hit it a couple times with a hammer, why a quart of fluid drianed out?

I used a Nissan Mechanic internet site ($15) and ask this question and he said I may have cracked the carrier bearing housing if I hit it really hard. But, since the transmission seems to work, don't think that's the situation.

I guess if it's not leaking transmission fluid from the axle, I shouldn't worry about it?

Hmm.. Okay, thanks. I guess since in manual shift mode, there was 1, 2, 3, D indicator readings, I always thought it was a 4-speed....

Can you take a pic of your shift knob? The 4 speed option was only in 2004.

After further review, looks like it is a 5-speed... Don't use the manual shift much and never used it beyond acceleration from a dead stop. But, got it to go into 5th.

Thanks for the education and I certainly learned something...

Yes, that is def. 5spd. 04's were the only 4speed Autos.
