Too Much Free Time v.2010 (Plasti-Dip)

So after reading the plasti dip threads and doing some research (youtube) I decided to try it myself.

I probably should've started on something a little less valuable but what the hell.

I planned on doing a wheel in white (Ace Hardware sells different colors) to see how it looked but after spraying a tape measure it was clear that the color wouldnt match the car so I tried black.

Here's a few pics.

CLEANED WHEEL FACE AND LIP WITH RUBBING ALCOHOL

PLASTI DIP

I did this with 3-4 even coats. I started a little heavy on the first, hit it with a hair dryer (LOW TEMP) waited 10-15 minutes and applied another coat, hair dryer, etc...

Be sure to allow plenty of dry time. A hair dryer (NOT A HEAT GUN) really speeds things up. Slowly start unwrapping the lip. I lightly went around the perimeter with a plastic razor blade to seperate the paint from the tape. Untape the back side making sure you dont touch any painted areas.

TEST FIT

I knew I didnt like black right off the bat. Whats funny is out of the 15-20 sets of wheels ive had for this car, this is the first black wheel mounted.

HAD TO GO

This stuff peals off as easy as it goes on. As long as its dry it comes right off without leaving any residue at all. What was cool was the fact the rivets stayed black. Every one of them looks perfect. I LOVE IT.

THOUGHTS?

This stuff is great. Period.

Im water proofing the servos on my nitro RC truck, painting some moldings on my van, blacking out my pathfinder emblems/skid plates and whatever else I can find now.

You think it would benefit me to try to shoot my wheels for winter? I've got 2 coats of powdercoat on them.

For the $6 a can, hell yes.

19's in the snow huh?

BTW, I went way too far on taping on this wheel. Im just going to shoot the other three along the rivet line, do the lug holes and just peel the excess off. NO PREP/TAPE NEEDED :shakeshout:

:like: the black rivets!

I was gonna try this with my summer wheels. Leaving the rivets and lip chrome, black out the spokes.

I dug around and found that you can clear right over this stuff.

If I were to do wheels/grilles, etc. I would clear it.

Looks great to me man, i knew you said you were board, LOL. I painted my interior pieces today, went pretty well until the edges of the plastic bag i did not secure went flying up and stuck to the paint, LOL

Wow that looks awesome! You've inspired me to try mine. How many cans of plastidip did you use? The rivets look awesome by the way

like Hawaii said would it make sense to plastidip our winter wheels? can it be a protection type of thing also?

Absolutely, its basically like a wheel condom.

Im betting you could spray chrome wheels inside and out and avoid salt corrosion all together. Then when you're ready, just peel it off.

I did kingobeachs emblems and grill last night. Looks amazing.

Im going to do the FX45 20's I have sitting around. It may change my mind on selling them.

I still love this look, but the paint will have to match for me.

That is one beautiful set of wheels on the Infinity. Was that all done with the Plasti-Dip? How long do you think it will last, before a re coat is necessary?

BkzNism06 11-20-2010 11:32 AM

Re: Too Much Free Time v.2010 (Plasti-Dip)

hmm i actually really like it. perhaps you can buy the midcoat if your color is qx3? and spray a coating or two on it to match? that would be a pretty expensive alternative of course lol

Those are the same wheels I have.

No, they aren't plasti dipped, they're painted.
