Default Infinite Baffle Set Up

I get a lot of private messages and questions about my Infinite Baffle or Open Air (Free Air) setup.

I had a pretty comprehensive thread on the old site about it, so I figured I might as well re-build it. I’m not the inventor of this setup, all of the credit goes to Nismos14 from the big.org. I just copied his work on his Altima, he helped me along the way.

What is IB/OA? Basically it’s a set up where the back of the woofer doesn’t have a box
IB/OA setups were really popular back in the late 80’s early 90’s. Kicker was big into it making 12 and 15 in subs for this type of setup. Back then installers would mount the 12in and 15in woofers to the back of the seat, not the deck. 8 and 10in they would mount to the deck. Prior to that you looked for the best pair of 6x9s you can get and put them in the rear deck. 6x9s are IB speakers.
Note: Not any speaker can go IB. It’s gotta have the right specs for it.

Why go IB? SPACE! You can get your trunk back and save weight from driving around a 50 to 100lb big box everywhere you go. Hits way harder than the puny stock subs that come with the Bose set up.

Why not IB? BASS! Well yes and no. A good 8in speaker can deliver some nice bass, and having it hit directly into the cabin off the back window helps too. It’s not 2 12in woofers though. I’m past the days of going for bass that will make the roof bounce, but I still demand

I’m not really much of a do it yourselfer but I have done some install work back when it was easy to install audio. I figured how hard could this be? It’s a rear deck. UGH! It was a lot tougher than I thought, but not impossible.

Okay, might do that tomorrow, thanks for that. I'm cool with how my system sounds, so I'm not swapping it out.

Thanks! You might be able to get by with just the MDF ring but you might have issues with squeezing the 8in woofer in there, my next pics will show how tight it is. Check this out PVC Speaker Adapters - CNC Machined - In Stock or Custom Made

I don't know if I can afford DLS free airs right now. Got any suggestions for something cheaper? I'll be running them off of my Alpine PDX-5. The birth sheet for the amp reads 412 watts for the sub channel.

I'm in the middle of this right now with the same DLS OA8 subs in my 2004. I got the passenger side mounted ok, but I haven't figured out the drivers' side yet. I had to grind down my MDF mounting ring so much just to get the Bose bracket to fit back up on the drivers side without the sub attached that when I attach the sub to the ring, the metal frame of the sub speaker hits the frame of the car. Going to have to offset that one some way. Just need to figure out how. Unfortunately, this is pretty much a weekend project for me, so during the week everything gets put on hold.

Thanks for all your help so far Apollos2.

Check the price on the MTX's he mentioned. He's got those in currently.

MTX 5508 DUAL 4OHM VOICE COILS

$90 ea, here

Might be able to find them cheaper. Sonic Electronix says they're discontinued though.

Once you have it taken apart and get your 3/4in MDF ring painted and pre-shaved at least to the same size as your adapters, you gotta mount it all up to the speakers.

Here you can see I didn't realized I had to shave them, I mounted and sealed them to the stock adapters, then had to take it all apart and do it again

DLS OPEN AIR 8IN (OA8) these speakers I can only describe as “Musical” the have incredible sound quality if you can believe that from a sub.

I am currently using MTX, much cheaper and have more “THUMP” to them. Not necessarily better sounding, just a little louder, more like what I was used to. Not opposed to going back to OA8, I just don’t have the $$ for that.

Here is a thread where NISMOS14 reviewed a bunch of speakers for this application. I believe the Critical Mass 8in wins the contest but they are like $350 each.

It’s really tight, even after shaving.

Here is where I cheaped out. My lack of experience (never did sound deadening) kicked in, I wish I would have done some more. Honestly I was wore out, and just wanted to get it finished.

To do it proper, I would have removed the felt from all plastic parts especially the deck lid and deadened them thoroughly and then done the whole rear deck and underneath.
I may go back to my favorite audio shop and fix it all up but it really doesn’t vibrate that much. Probably the biggest noise would be sometimes from the rear brake light and with window.

AND WE ARE DONE!
So at this point I was still running all stock, except for the sub swap.

Did you have to unbolt the seat belts to get the shelf cover out? Mine just hangs down in front of the seat while the belts are still through it. Is there a trick to get it out?

Also, what did you use to seal them up? Some kind of DAP Gasket stuff, I see. Just wondered if you could post specifics if you remember.
