Default Grom Audio USB Kit

Well Gang, I installed the Grom Audio USB Kit in my 06 Maxima with the Bose System. Very nice. No more CD's in my car with no extra expense of an iPhone or iPod to make it work. I bought the entire kit for $129 with a $10 coupon code I found online (hint hint: SPRING) including shipping and they even threw in a 2 Gb thumb drive. Much, much less than an iPod for sure. I had an 8 Gb drive already, so decided to use it to get started. Here's what I have discovered so far:

Installation took all of 15 minutes.

The kit hooks to a hot wire on the radio for memory only. They even include a fool-proof wire tap device to make it easy.

All connectors are designed for plug and play with the factory radio.

You just unplug the connector that routes to the XM unit, plug the Grom connector in its place, and then plug the XM unit into the female connector of the Grom unit.

The device is much smaller than a pack of Lucky's and lays under the stereo around the shift cables. No holes, no screws, no tape.

It came with a USB extension cable that easily routed into my glove box. Again, no modifications just dropped in under the owner's manual.

When I change usb drives, I just open the glove box and swap it out.

To operate it, I just hit the SAT button and it starts right up instantly. My Max never had XM, but I'm guessing that it would still work somehow. Why else would you reconnect it?

It remembers up to 4 USB drives.

What it remembers is where you were the last time you removed the drive.

You can throw up to 1000 songs in each subdirectory. I suspect that you can have as many subdirectories as you'd like, but the display can only track 10 correctly and then the numbers start over. I have around 19 directories/albums on one drive and it still allows playback of all.

I have one drive crammed full of music that is all in a single directory.

There is a way to tell the stereo to play random, and it does a good job if it.

I have another drive that is loaded with full cd's. You can easily change directories to change albums. In this case, it will play in order, random by album, or random by entire drive.

The device remembers each album and picks up where you left off if you decide to listen to something else and come back later.

The quality of sound is as good as you can get, based on the source of your files. I have MP3's and Windows Media Files. The both play well, but I select Windows Media when ripping a full disc to insert a track number in front of the name. This device will not play items purchased online like iTunes due to copyrights. If you've been messing with files for a while, you've probably figured out how to burn to a CD and then rip them.

Song title and artists are easily displayed on the monitor, but characters are limited. I think that's a Bose limitation.

The steering wheel controls work flawlessly.

I will admit that it took some trial and error to figure out how to work it. Maybe I'll post that later.

If you just want to use your iPod/iPhone, you can buy an adapter and your stereo will control it too.

Device can control USB drive or Android Phone as is. For a few extra bucks, you can add Bluetooth/IPhone/iPod/Line in. I'm happy with it as is.

So there you have it. I hope you guys (and girls) find this helpful.

Clean up your car today. Buy one of these and get those CD's out of your car!

Very nice write up. Interesting.

Are you keeping the website where you purchased this device a secret?

Never mind. I just found it.
It is odd they don't make this for the 2004 Maxima.

Wow, this sounds very interesting. Definitely something I will like to have.

Is there anybody here in the Houston/Dallas or San Antonio area that can do this mod? If yes, I will like to buy one and would like you to help me install this. I will definitely compensate you for your time. Please, PM me anybody who can do this.

has anyone added their bluetooth portion with it?
I am less concerned with playing from thumb drive, as I am with via bluetooth.
And has anyone used the cheaper unit?

I'm thinking of going with the cheap unit and the bluetooth dongle. that way I'll have the BT and a headphone plug so the wife can use her iPod etc? Maybe add the iPod play/charge thing later? but she'll probably use her phone too once she sees it's easier?

If no one has tried the cheaper one, I'll try it and let you know.

OK, just got an email back from them.
They don't do any text over bluetooth for what's playing.

Boo.

So I went with the more expensive one, and will use the USB cord to my phone so I can see what songs are playing.
Yes. It's silly to spend 50$ more for that, but oh well.

Found this too late to help... I bought and use the cheaper one with both the USB/3.5 Jack and iPod cable and have to say, the cheaper one is cheaper for a reason. The cord it comes with has the USB plug and 3.5 Jack. However the USB is POWER only. It does not read anything. Also the iPod adapter allows the track button to work but not the steering wheel track buttons. You can still use t with the 3.5 jack but it will not read your phone through the USB.

Well, that's good to hear that it sounds like I made the right choice.
I'm still trying to decide if I'd have been happier with aftermarket, or this route.

I think this is the right choice. I just don't want to go down the rabbit hole of new head unit, then new amps, then new speakers, then sound deadening, then an even better head unit, then a better amp, etc etc
I'm an old guy now. Don't need all that loud music you young kids like.

Do it.

It's just money.

Mine just came in today, should have time tomorrow to get it installed, so I'll post up my impression then.

Just installed the Grom bluetooth kit today and I can honestly say its a solid product and sounds awesome. One of my best upgrades so far. I have the NDSS system and am actually satisfied and partially amazed with its performance (for being the little brother of bose). The kit was the perfect modernizing addition without having to replace the HU and speakers.
