Default How To Determine If You Need To Roll Your Fenders and/or Modify Your Wheel Well

Thanks to @joecurr

There are several factors that can play a role between one person rubbing and another not. What is the width of your wheel? Tire brand also plays a role, not all tires are created equal. Keeping the same size but switching brands, you may find that you have more or less room between the fenders as some brands run narrow, some true, and some wide.

Before you make any modifications, try completely removing the fender liner. Pull your car parallel to a driveway (with a sidewalk), then reverse and parallel park so one side of the car is going up the sidewalk and the other is still in the street. Have someone watch so they can tell you when the compression reaches a max. This way you'll be able to check for fender clearance and potentially test rubbing before you cut/shave any metal, you may just have to trim the fender liner.

Here's an example of how I check for clearance. I compress the rear suspension more as I go further up the sidewalk, which makes the wheel tuck into the fender. As far as I know, this should be exactly how your suspension compresses under normal driving conditions so it should simulate any conditions where you'd rub.

You can also place the rear of the car on jack stands and place a jack under the rear arm and jack it up. Tats how I do it.

Whenever I'm not busy and lazy, which is rare. It's usually one or the other.

You can do it either way, but I'd rather do whichever is quickest.
