Default Key Stuck In Ignition

Yesterday everything was fine. I had to run to the store and when I got there put the max in park turned the key off and.......BLAM the key wont come out. It is now a day later and the key is still stuck. I have no problem starting and driving but the key isn't coming out. What can I do to release the key?

thats odd.. whenever you turn the car off, make sure you arent passing where it usually stops. push the key in a little more and wiggle the steering wheel and simultaneously try to wiggle the key out. (im just taking a shot in the dark to try and help)

maybe, if ya could, take a small video of you trying to release the key. maybe that could help us see if something is getting hung up. just a suggestion.

Well I got the key out.

I thought to go up under the dash/steering column to the backside of the ignition. Twisting myself under there I was able to find what looked like a release botton. After pressing on it and turning the key at the same time the key was free.

Sure hope thats the last time this happens...lol

I was going to recommend pushing up on the parking lever while trying to turn the key or wiggle the steering wheel side to side while turning the key

You may want to keep the release readily available. Check the shifter area and make sure its reasonably clean and the contacts are good. This can lead to the car not thinking its in park which you need to remove the key. (If its an auto).

Sometimes if your car is parked quickly your tranny gearing could be slightly out of park not allowing your key to release its one of those odd things that can pop up for no good reason usually a shifter jiggle and key wiggle it will pop out but worst case release button works as you found out haha

Couple things. People who steal cars today use a method called jiggling. They take a filed down key and jiggle it softly while gently turning the key until it pops. This also damages the tumbler and leaves bits of key inside it.

Having said that, if you have a key cut and the key is not cleaned properly it can also leave key crud in your tumbler.

Of course, you just might be a wild man. I've seen all three happen.

Either way it could be a sign of tumbler failure. Lube that sucker up with graphite and hope for the best.

It could also be the switch itself.
