Default How to Remove Chrome Roof Strip

Member Credit: 1PrjctMax!

First you pop the trunk and there is ONE screw for each side that holds the rear plastic/chrome piece on. Once you take that screw out, you can carefully pop that one piece out.

Click the image to open in full size.

That's how it looks removed.

Now in the front you take off the black plastic thing by the windshield

Click the image to open in full size.

Now you can carefully push on the entire assembly towards the back of the car. The thing "slips" into place, so that is how you take it out as well. When you put it back in, you can just line all of the slots up and "pop" them in.

This is how it looks with them both off.

So from there you Paint them? Or do you do this even if you are going to black it out with Trimbrite?

Yeap they are usually painted after removed. Some of the Chrome usually cracks over time and turns yellowish so people just paint them over. Easy mod.

I ordered that TrimBrite tape cause I was told the paint chips and you gotta redo it often,, Is there a down side to the Trimbrite?

When i bought my car there was never any chrome color on the strips just some wierd dull grey color.... That grey color is starting to "bubble up"... there is a clear plasic coating that is starting to seperate from the strip. Should i try to remove this before painting? The platic coating is not broken anywhere, i can just see tiny bubbles here and there... I will try to get pics later.

You can probably very very lightly sand the bubbles off before painting .

I'd probably just wrap it black or color matched to the car.

Not sure which is easier.. i mean.. if both requires you to take off the strips then i think wrapping would be easier.. I know it'll be worth it though because the paint could chip n then you have to do it all over again.

Personally I'd sand them reguardless if they were bubbling or not.

Paint or vinyl/tape will adhere better to a clean, roughed surface.

Im gonna paint mine this week. I plan on sanding off the shine, clean and primer before paint.
