Default How to Access/Change The MAP Light

OK, I went ahead this evening and replaced the orange map light in my 07 with a blue 3mm LED. Just for the record, I have an 07 SE, with most SL options...power moonroof, leather, heated seats, heated wheel, power folding mirrors, TCS, etc...

Here is my write-up on this.
Here is the switch panel with the hideous orange map light:

Click the image to open in full size.

First step is to open the sunglass holder and remove the single screw:

Click the image to open in full size.

Next step is to start tring to release the clips following this procedure:
I started at the moonroof edges and I had to pull down pretty hard on one corner at a time. Once the first corner popped free, I moved to the other corner closest to the sunroof. Once both of those were free, I went to each corner closest to the windshield. There are 2 metal clips holding the switch panel closest to the windshield, and 2 plastic "push-pin" clips holding it closest to the sunroof. Be forewarned, you probably will break one or both of the "push-pin" clips when they pop free. I broke one of mine, so I'll have to track down a replacement.

Here is the broken "push-pin" clip:

Click the image to open in full size.

Here is what you have once all four pins/clips have been released and you unplug the 4 wiring harnesses:

Click the image to open in full size.

Now you need to take out the 7 screws that I circled in red:

Click the image to open in full size.

Once you do this, you'll be able to remove the circuit board from the switch assembly. Here is my board mounted to my "helping hands". You can also see the stock square LED:

Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

At this point, I turned the board over, broke out the soldering iron and de-soldering braid and removed the old LED. The black "barrel" over the legs of the LED slid right off, and onto the new LED. I took a step bit and opened up the square hole in the switch plate just a LITTLE bit. Then I soldered the new LED into the board, re-using the black "barrel". I also raised the LED up a little higher, so that the bulb sits just a little bit lower than the hole in the switchplate, that's why it looks like the new bulb is sitting so high...it is!

Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

Here you can see me test fitting the LED to get the correct height prior to soldering it in:

Click the image to open in full size.

Here's the only replacement pin that I could dig out of my garage to replace the one I broke:

Click the image to open in full size.

I shouldn't have wasted my time...it doesn't hold...not large enough in diameter.

Installation is the reverse of disassembly. Here is the new blue LED in operation:

Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

I'll try to get some night pics tomorrow night. NOTE****You do NOT need to use a resistor on the LED leg...there is a resistor on the board which limits the voltage to the LED.

This is nothing like the 04-06.... 04-06 has a BULB, not a LED.

Thanks...it's always a job when I'm involved! I've been meaning to do this for quite a while, but have just never gotten around to it. Once I got it back in and turned on the lights, I realized that I should have changed the orange "bluetooth" indicator light while I was in there :sFi_fryingpan:

Since I have to pull the panel back down to replace the broken clip (once I get some more), I'll change out the other bluetooth LED and add it to the write-up here. Next job is to tackle the heated seats/steering wheel lights!

Thanks guys, just remember...the 04-06 are different...they apparently use an actual bulb, not an LED. The switch panel removal process should be the same though.

OOOOOOOOO....TOTAL THREAD JACK !!!

Just kidding! The visor lights are from Autolumination.
Vanity Mini 3 Led SMT Festoon, about 1/3 of the way down on this page:
http://autolumination.com/festoon.htm

The 3mm map light map can be gotten anywhere...
Radio Shack
Mouser.com
Oznium.com

Be sure yours takes a 3mm LED and not a bulb before you buy anything.
