Default How To Fix Metal On Metal Sound (Gussets)

Courtesy of prjctmax

Metal on metal sound/Gusset DIY fix.

So I purchased the "gusset," aka the broken bracket and installed it today.

At first I thought I had to take the y-pipe off in order to do so...bad idea since I do not have air-tools and I got every single bolt off except for ONE! So I lay under my car thinking and starring at the damn bracket. And I figured out that I could squeeze my hands through there and take the thing out with a little effort and time, since the room is very minimal to work with.

Tools needed-14mm ratcheting wrench (makes it easier) and a 14mm socket with a short extension

After I got both of them off I compared and this is the "old" and the "new"

Click the image to open in full size.

Judging by the huge crack where the bolt goes in I figured that I should put a washer and "lock-washer" (or whatever they are called) in for added surface area so that after time the bolt would not "eat" through the bracket again and snap that piece off AGAIN.

I also decided to keep the front heat-shield off that was needed to take out the front 3 bolts from the y-pipe.

Here is the final "product"

Well I have the gusset rattle from the Underworld...
I have removed both gussets.
I have removed the heat shield (connecting Y pipe to Pre Cats).
I have completely replaced my Y-pipe with the one from Racingline.
I still have a brutal rattle in the 2-3000 RPM range.

Any help???

As mention before, i had grinding/rattling noise at low rpm and at high rpm as well. This noise was annoying and it's common on maximas. Took my car several to the dealership and never told me it was normal. Basically, to deal with it. They told me to use a thicker oil and better gas. I'm already using synthetic and 93. They finally found where the noise was coming from. They replace the rack and pinion. And fellas, the noise is gone!!!!

The labor cost was 671.30.
The parts amount was 1408.07

I didn't paid a cent because i have the extended warranty. If you have extended warranty and have the same problem, take advance of it.

Thanks for posting this. That noise was driving me crazy. I removed my gusset and the noise is gone!

One thing of note. I have a 2004, and my bolts were 12mm, not 14mm. Not sure if they changed at some point, but mine were definitely 12mm.

No more rattle!
