Default Tinting Tail Lights

First after making few calls with IPCW they finally gave me the tracking number for the replacement set. i have ruby red tail lights but now i want to go little darker with tail lights since rest of the pretty much dark. i have BW9 color code on my maxima. black wheels, tinted windows, painted black headlight housing. now i want the tail lights to be little darker to go with the wheels and windows. But i need to know which is better tint film or paint them. If i do paint them i will have them spary one light coat of black, clear it , buff it out.

Thanks,
deep

If you don't want something so permanent go this route. I put these on in case I had issues with the police. It's an overlay, so it can be peeled off. Turned out good on my taillights, still shiny after over a year.

Kind of a pain in the ass to put on though.

I like the way those look, but it would be better if they cut out the circle for the reverse lights. Guess you would have to install the HID's in the reverse lights.

Yea, I've thought about doing that. Honestly I'm getting to the point where I might have them painted with the reverse light showing. My tailights are so ugly without tint and never had an issue with the cops. So I figure what the hell.

Film is such a bitch to install. Have you had the red ZK lights? They are a little darker than stock red.

I wouldn't touch them. They have the darker red color anyway compared to stocks.

Tinting tails is illegal in CA, so if you're taking the chance, don't do anything that can't be removed easily. Or else, you'll have to buy new tails.

I am debating on taking the light apart and painting the chrome in side black to make it look darker. Less reflection inside but I am concerned with condensation afterwards. I don't have it with my ruby reds now but it is always a possibility and it voids the warranty. I wish they would allow you to order them like that.

Latin,
I hope you have better luck then I did on opening the stock tails...I have ruined a single tailight trying to open it, even though I read on here that someone tried it and were unsuccesfull. I wanted to see if I can do it...Epic Fail. The tail lens CAN NOT take heat like the headlight. The chemical makeup of the plastic is less resistant to heat. I will post pics if you'd like once I get home later tonight

Deep007,
IMO, I would choose the option of shooting them. Mine have 3 light passes of tinted clear on them. Just tell your painter to tint some clear... and do maybe 2 passes. if thats not dark enough, you can shoot another coat within reasonable amount of time (clear flashing/time). Best bet is to hang around when they are shooting it and let them know when YOU feel they are dark enough.. It will look as glossy as stock tails, and way better then "nightshades".

When I had my stock ones on I did 2 coats of tint. I left the reverse lights clear and they looked pretty nice.

Process: scuff with 3m pad, first coat of tint, sand with 1500 grit sand paper, second coat then 2000 grit sand paper, polish, clear coat 1500 grit second coat of clear 2000 grit and polish

I know its illegal and I live in a city where the cops are a total pain in the ass and I never had an issue. I see people with blacked out tails all the time. My sons best friends father is CHP and he told me some cops will pull you over but most really wont bother unless they get you for some thing else.

Spray them. I had vinyl on my stocks and it looked good for a while, but eventually they start to become dull and you'll have to remove it and install a new one. With paint you'll at least be able to buff it if it dulls.
