Default Seat Belt Retracting Too Slow

My drivers seat belt seems to be getting weaker and weaker when I take it off. It just dangles there and sometimes wants to get slammed when I shut the door. It does eventually retract back into the pillar.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there something in the retracting mechanism to tweak, or should I just buy some new "whatchamacallit" and call it a day?

The retracter is screwed up. If our belts have pre-tensioners then you don't want to mess with it. It is a chemical charge that fires in event of a crash and puts tension on the belt. I don't think our cars have them, but I'm not sure.

If there are no pre-tensioners, then you may be able to mess with the retracting spring to tighten it up, but your safest bet is probably to replace the belt.

Craig,

I did a little Google checking and from what I can find, it seems MOST newer cars use pretensioners. I would give the stealership a call and ask before I touch the retractor. The pretensioners are tied into the airbag system.

Thanks for the info Don.
I didn't know about pretensioners. I should probably also try slamming my brakes on to see if the belt even tightens up.

I can't help because I don't know much about this but I will chime in and say that sometimes when my friends just take off their seatbelts and leave it tangled, it doesn't retract but I just simply straighten it out and push it towards retracting until it catches and retracts again . Don't think that was much help but thought I would throw that out there.

I have to hand straighten it right now so it will retract, otherwise it will just lay there.

Yeah I have to straighten it then it retracts. I didn't know that wasn't normal?

It should help. The tensioner/spring is different than the locking mechanism for when you hard brake.

I'd just get a new belt homie.

It used to be able to go in by itself, and much faster.

Craig, pull the belt out slightly, and then give it a quick/firm pull and see if it locks...it should. As Mando stated though, that is a different mechanism than the pretensioners. If you can pull the interior trim to get to the tensioner mechanism, see if there is anything there with a yellow plug. If there is something near the tensioner and it has a yellow plug, that is the pretensioner...I'd buy a new belt.

If you go the new belt route...make sure to disconnect the battery and wait 30 minutes before you mess with the belts. You don't want that thing to fire when you are removing it.

Mine does that bull shit where it will not retract by its self like it did when it was new. After cleaning it does better but not like new. I only clean at the height adjuster. Dirt and grime builds up underneath the seat belt on the height adjuster.

Maybe you need some seat belt fluid.
