Default I Give Up (On Painting Headlights)

Decided to take on the task of painting my headlights today since im off work. Got the headlight out, removed all the pieces that needed to be removing(via the DIY tread on this site) baked it at 225 for 20 minutes, started to pry apart the cover from the assembly, my assembly now has a large crack in it. Im not even going to attempt to finish this or start on the other one. My plans for the day were to paint the chrome black, install my LED switchbacks and clean my yellowing dirty headlights. Looks like only two of those will get done today.

Ouch...that sucks.

Make sure to use some silicone to seal it or you will get a lot of condensation.

If they weren't opening when you took them out the oven you should of put them back in the oven a couple more minutes. What you use to try to pry them open?

I used a butter knife as a wedge. The sealant was melted and I was getting along just fine until that happened. I thought I cud handle this project but apparently not. Gonna do what 07maxi says and just seal it up and stick to chrome. i was looking forward to doing this but....

I have to be honest...I know a lot of people here have done this, but this is the first time I ever heard of this happening. I cant explain it because I haven't done this to mine. I want to but its things like this that stop me.

You just have to be gentle when opening them, do not force them open. You can look on eBay for a broken headlight to replace the assembly plus it can help you as practice.

No offense but it's just common sense to put it back in the oven if the assembly is hard to pry apart .

lol none taken, whats done is done. It wasnt hard to pry i got most of it apart with little effort. Th tutorial recommended 15 minutes and i did it for 20. Currently sealing the crack and restoring the headlights as we speak.

sucks to hear. stuff like this is what prevents me from doing the headlight mod myself. i guess you live and learn. in my case, i rather live with plain headlights or get a pro like shayne to do it rather than do it myself

Its not the oven that cracked them. It applying too much force in the wrong place.

Heres what it looks like with the switchbacks installed(im sure u all have seen them a million times) lol. It came out pretty well and the turtle wax restoration kit worked well, i hope it lasts. The colors match it looks a little offf due to the camera plus i had just turned on the headlights so the bulb wasnt warmed up yet.

But thanks everyone!

This is a very true statement. People ask me all the time how I learned to work on cars, my response " a lot of mistakes"... The only bad mistake is the one we dont learn from!!
