Default Headlight Replacement Caused Headlights To Be Out Of Adjustment

Hey guys, I dropped my bumper and pulled out the headlight housings to replace my factory bulbs. Everything went back together smoothly but now my lights are way out of alignment. I can barely see anything now. The bulbs themselves are not the problem, they're actually much brighter than the OEM bulbs i replaced. It just seems they are pointing WAY down and the passenger side is down and left.

any ideas on what i did wrong?

It sounds to me like the bulbs aren't seated properly. They can only go in one way. Did you pay attention to how the old ones came out and how you put the new ones in?

I know it does seem like that to me too, but like you said they only go in one way and i know for sure i have them clipped in there. As far as the orientation of the bulbs, no i did not pay attention to them when i pulled them out.

Thats normal. Just re aim them. Its like when you replace tires, you have to get an alignment.

I beileve either the bulb or the housing has some sort of notch in it that has to line up just right with one another.

I've never done this with any other vehicle I've had/changed the bulbs in.

Do you have halogen or xenon headlights? If halogen, did you replace them with the OEM 9012's or are you using 9006's? If xenon, are you using OEM D2S or aftermarket?

+1, assuming the bulb alignment is ruled out. There is a vertical adjustment screw on the back of the headlamp, try adjusting those to see if it helps.

With any car where you have to physically remove and reinstall the headlamp when changing bulbs you'll more than likely need to re-align the headlights.

Either you didn't remove the headlamps from the car or you got lucky.

dont mess with the adjusting screws yet. if you didnt touch the adjustment screws in the beginning then there is no reason for them to be misaligned. drop the bumper again and unbolt the headlights and try to reseat the bulbs better. then reassemble and see how it all goes.

when you take out your headlights, there is no reason for the adjustment to be off unless you messed with the screw since it is internal to the headlight housing.

I had the same issue when I bought my car. I thought a bulb was bad. I pulled it out and saw nothing wrong. When I put it back it it was a world's difference. It obviously had been seated wrong and was aiming almost straight down before. The only thing off for me know is both headlights seemed aimed to the right too far compared to my brother's 05. Can't find a way to adjust horizontal setting.

Sounds like you might have gotten D2R (R=reflective) bulbs. The tip of them are "blacked" out so the light doesn't shine straight forward. These are used in 02-03 maximas which some hid dealers assume work with the 6th gen.
If you didn't mess with the adjustment screws, I wouldn't start messing with them unless you needed a little "fine tuning"

I just wanted to update this thread in case anyone else ever has a blonde moment like I did. I took everything back apart and sure enough both headlights were not seated in properly which caused them to be way off.
