Default FYI: Legality of Tinted Headlights

Okay guys, so I recently got black rims...

Click the image to open in full size.

And with the white car I really wanted to black out the amber side markers on the headlights. I know a lot of guys like @deep007 made custom housings. However I realize to tint or remove the amber is illegal. Have you guys experienced problems with tinted Head light side markers? Or tinted headlights in general?

The schmuck at the tinting place I called said he could only do a spray on, instead of a laminate strip. Any input/ opinions from you guys?

Had mine tinted on panda for years with no issues. Cops don't normally give you crap about side markers, mostly on tails if they're too dark.

I live in Califonia and I think we have some pretty tough laws here, usually tinting anything will get you a ticket...however...my sons best friends dad is a CHP and I always ask him a lot of questions regarding laws.

It seems to me that there is a lot of gray area with things we do to our cars. He told me that if some thing in particular bothers a cop they will pull you over. Others dont mind it and will leave you alone. About 2 years ago I got pulled over on the freeway and the cop asked "do you know why I pulled you over", I said nope. It was a tinted license plate cover. He commented about my windows being tinted, but said I was fine, gave me a fix it ticket and sent me on my way. Ive had tinted windows, I used to have tinted tails and I never had a single issue with those... I guess the bottom line is you take your chances.

i had a friend who had a dark grey altima with smoked tailights and smoked headlights and the tinted side markers and a cop pulled him over and told him that those side markers had to be amber and can not be smoked..the cop could have been a bored but that was the only time a cop told my friend something. We are in Texas so not sure if same rules apply everywhere.

No shit. This exact scenario happened to me yesterday. Got a new job in a rich suburb in NY. All my friends forewarned me that it's a small town and the cops are dicks... Lo and behold the first day I'm driving home, a cop pulls me over.

Ok..
"do you know why I pulled you over?"
No...
"your tail light is out"

FYI, one SINGLE DIODE is out on my fully functioning pair of tail lights. But since Hes so observant, he gave me a warning to "fix it". Fml.

Yup,small town cops can be the worst. I live in a small town to and for the most part Ive been really lucky. Even though Ive never been hassled when Im sitting at a light or stuck in traffic,if I see a cop Ill roll my windows down. One day I might not be so lucky!!

I had that too for years and no issues. As long as its mounted on your bumper and visible, there should be any problems.

Whenever you tint something, the most important thing is that whatever you are tinting is still visible. Lights, License plate, etc.

You shouldn't have any problems. Usually cops don't pull you over specifically for the tint. They usually ticket you for that if they pulled you over for example like speeding and you were being a dick to them, so now they just want to make you suffer and ticket you for everything. As long as its not so dark that you cant see it, you should be fine.

Yea just buy the tint and do it yourself. I'm pretty sure I saw a post somewhere on here that there is a way to remove the spray tint. Look it up in case you want to go that route.

Here's my opinion coming from a city that cops have huge 2x4's up there asses. A tiny film on a stock headlight will stand out much more than yor whole headlight painted inside with the painted side marker or a full headlight tint. If your headlights have never been painted then I would consider it or Atleast tint your whole headlight. My headlights are painted AND tinted and cops see me ALL the time and never say anything (knock on wood) I guess because they don't notice that my headlights are painted they don't bother looking if there's a reflector or not, I think if cops literally looked that much into details of car in legality their would be a big issue with them seriously not having anything to do. I feel that a tint strip stands out much more and you can get pulled over just because tinting is illegal and they can obviously see that it's tinted, if you paint your heads or fully tint maybe they won't notice the contrast that much.

I know for a fact in Maryland, you will fail inspection if your headlights reflectors are painted or not visible. I know this because a friend just got failed and told to fix it.

@MikesMax The first thing I did when I got my max was tint the amber and my taillights. I haven't had ANY issues during the time I had it. I don't think you'll have any problems.

Did you use a spray or a strip? He didn't quote me a price because the shop didn't want to do it for legality reasons lol. Text me or tell me what stuff I should be buying

It may not be the inspection, per-se, but more so a cops motive to pull you over and fuck you for tinting the side marker. NOT all cars come with this side marker, so IMO they shouldn't heckle you for it. But, once again, if you have them it's just another easy thing they can fuck with you about.

ohhh i see actually the law is really wierd and cops are too...i currently work at a government building where theres literally a sheriff department in the basement and 4th floor...and the sheriff's station is right across from the building i have my tail lights tinted like no other and 30% tint in my front windows(driver and passenger) i pass cops all the time even pull up next to them and in front of them ive seen them check my plates and since i have a clean record all they do is turn on the following street...i guess it all depends on your luck

In my old POS Altima I was merging on a state highway from a local highway, and a cop tried to cut me off before I could merge. I didn't see him doing this so I merged on. I could swear I coul see veins popping in his head and he IMMEDIATELY lit me up, just to get all mad and yell in my face because I "cut him off" trying to get on the damn highway.

Power trip, OD
