Blackout tape seems to be the overwhelming choice here. I tried pulling mine to paint them and broke a couple of clips. So I will be going the blackout tape route as well once I get some free time, and find a place that sells it.

Or an easier way is to plastidip them. You don't have to take the strips off to do that.

Plastidip. Covering your entire car in paper is the hardest part. Plastidip overspray is a bitch so make sure you cover everything. After that its easy. Leave like a 1-2 inch space on either side of the trim and cover that whole area with the plastidip. After 4-5 coats just peel away and it will cut itself out around the trim. Worked real well for me. You can also spray the plastic trim on either side of the rear window so it all matches.

Edit: I should add that the amount of coats depends on how heavy each coat is. You want enough so that when you peel the excess off it comes off in one piece without leaving anything behind.

SummitRacing.com has the blackout tape. You may be able to find it at your local AutoZone/Advance parts stores.

no that's how you get the chrome back. If I were to black them out I would tape the area off and spray with satin black paint, krylon would even work. Just be sure to use a wax/grease remover and spray a coat of adhesion promotor beforecthe color coat. This process will yield great results that WILL NOT come off.

Just finished doing mine about an hour ago. Blacked them out using plasti dip, left it with the matte finish, and also did my back emblems at the same time. Looks 10x better. I didn't get a completely smooth edge on one of 'em because the tape was a little too close for a clean peel but I can bare with it for now and will eventually do it over even faster and better.

Oh also I was lazy and didn't cover everything up, so I had light overspray all over the roof, door windows, windshield, and back window as well as all the framing near the strips. Only ended up costing me about 10 mins with a microfiber towel and some elbow grease. All's good now though, so just a heads up on that if you take the shortcut like I did.
