Default Air Bags Duration

Do our air bags expire? That is do they have limited years of functionality?

That is an excellent question.

I have read several reports and opinions, which still leave me wondering and confused about this topic.

Air bags have been around since the early 70's but were not standard in all cars until 1998 (I think).

If you have followed the news you will know there have been issues with airbags whether they deployed unexpectedly or not at all.

For all the good they claim to do, I still think of them as a loaded gun pointed at my head, never knowing if they will save my life when needed or kill me unnecessarily.

I don't have the answer to your question.

I think they have proven to be most reliable for the most part.

I often wonder how long and how reliable the electronics and mechanics of these "Bombs" are when related to age, heat and cold.

Sorry, I don't have the answer to your question.

Yeah, I agree with you it's a tough call. Here's what a Mercedes-Benz TSB says:
"Airbags, that were installed in Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles up
to January 1992 have a service life of 15 years. After this service life
has elapsed, the airbags must be replaced at the customer's cost. The
service life is evident from a sticker that is either on the
B pillar (driver's side) or on the inside of the vehicle's glove
compartment lid. New airbag technology has made lifelong functional
reliability possible, which means that the airbag service life restriction
no longer applies."

No such sticker is placed on our 6th gen--well, I didn't find it on mine-- implying probably that the SRS in our cars has lifelong functional reliability.

The technology used in newer cars like the 6thgens don't have a life restriction.

What even more scary is people who have accidents, don't report it, fix it themselves and just get a used airbag which may not be functional.

Ok. If I read thundershott correctly, let's keep faith.

Good Info:

Good afternoon.
There is always disagreements with everything on the internet. The facts are that the airbags themselves were designed to outlast the vehicle and in most cases do. There are occurrences of the airbags themselves failing but this is normally caused by a poor connection that made it through quality control back at the factory.

As is the case with any automotive component, everything is capable of failure. If there is any type of failure in any of the airbag components, the warning light will come on. This is a very sensitive system that is constantly monitored by the computer...

Please let me know if I can assist any further...

Thanks, Josh

In the couple of airbag classes that I've been to, I've never heard anything about airbags expiring.

You know when the airbag life is at its end. Between the airbag module and the sensor in the airbag, your going to get the light on your dash if either of the components are not functioning properly. As for replacing an airbag, federal law requires you to replace any airbag with a new airbag not used even if the vehicle that your getting the airbag has never been involved in an accident. Lets say someone gets into an accident, the airbag doesnt deploy and some how they find out you replaced it with a used part, you could be in some trouble.
