Default 07 Maxima Headlight Issues

I have an '07 Max with about 65k miles. I was driving and my driver's side headlight just flickered on and off and then went off. My fog light was still on but later on I noticed that to get dimmer as well.

Took it to the dealership and they said my "headlight control unit" is going bad and need a new one and a new Xenon headlight. They were going to charge me $950 which was ridiculous.

Has anyone had any issues with this going bad and if so what should I do or expect to pay to replace it. Keeping fingers crossed that I just need either the new bulb or the control unit but not both.

Also I know nothing about fixing cars so I am helpless!

Ballast - 04 05 06 07 08 09 010 Nissan Maxima Xenon HID Ballast NZMNS111LBNA | eBay

The ballast gets the power from the car and causes the HID bulb to fire up. And yes, OEM HID bulbs are EXPENSIVE! But don't buy those, get one (if needed) from any other supplier like The Retrofit Source online: headlight upgrades for all applications

So you could replace just the Ballast and not the entire "control unit" as the amazing factory trained technician worded it or are these one in the same (ballast is part of the control unit)

Maybe I should learn a little something about cars so I would know these answers!

I was about to say the same, Arent those two parts The same (ballast and headlight control unit).

My passenger side ballast does that sometime. I just havent felt like taking off the bumper to replace it, plus i want to add Halos or something next time i go through that process. Not hard just time consuming. I figure its the ballast because the passenger side humms sometime. Quck fix, I turn the lights off and then back on, mines mainly does it on very humid days, and hard bumps. Most of the time it stays on after off and on cycle.

Maybe or maybe not. I've never heard of the "control unit" they're talking about, you may want to clarify that with them.

To the OP...the OEM/Factory ballasts are pretty bulletproof...I'm surprised you are having issues with it...I don't think I've seen anyone have issues with a factory ballast yet!

If you can, switch your driver's/passenger bulbs side to side and see if the problem follows the bulb, or stays on the driver's side. If the problem follows the bulb, then the bulb is bad, if the problem stays on the driver's side, then the ballast is probably bad.

If you want an OEM quality HID kit, look at the MORIMOTO kits. They are pricey, but one of our members bought one (after having nothing but trouble with one of the lesser-quality kits) and he was highly impressed. MORIMOTO is apparently an OEM distributor. If you don't want to spend that much money, then any of the cheap aftermarket kits will do. I've got an aftermarket HID kit in my fogs, and I've already replaced one of the ballasts, and now the other side is acting up.

I think when my other fog ballast completely goes, I may spring for the Morimotos....I don't want to keep dropping the bumper to mess with them.
