Default New Wheels, Question.

I'm looking to replace my stock 18 wheels and tires. Half the time, I drive the car 2 miles to work and back, BUT my wife takes the car twice a week to work with the baby. She drives 60 miles both ways, mostly highway. We live in Chicago, pothole central. Ideally I would like at least 19's, possibly 20s with low profile tires. My concern is her popping a tire or bending a rim driving that much. I also am not too keen on swapping setups for winter. So am I to assume an aftermarket 18 wheel with 245 45 is my best option? I plan to put some progress springs on within the year.

With your situation, I would stick with an 18" wheel/tire combo. I have 19"s with low profile tires...they absolutely SUCK in the winter.

definitely stick with 18's for your situation. The baby and wife are more important

I agree the low profiles would not be a good choice. What about a 245/35/20 all season?

Stick with 18's, look into the G35 or 350z anniversary wheels. Both are 18" wheels and looks good.

Thanks for the input. I am still curious why 19's with 245/35/19 tires would be unsafe for the wife to drive twice a week?

Well for one, obviously being 19's they're 1in bigger. 245/35's have a smaller sidewall than the stock 18's. The 19" tire will cost you more than the 18". Not that they'll be unsafe, just a lower profile tire than stock. Potholes are potholes....if they are going to get you, they will get you. As far as A/S 19 or 20"...They are ALL Z rated, in the snow they all will suck.

Basically you dont want a thinner profile than the stock [45] profile. 35 is a lower profile and if you hit a pothole, you risk bending the rim.

If thats true, then is anyone with a lower then 45 profile taking a huge risk driving?

Absolutely.... Like im running 245/35/20's all around... i dodge potholes all the time because if I do fall in one... could bend the rim, put a bubble in the tire, could crack a rim... etc

Im officially confused. I started looking into new wheel tires a few days ago, never realizing theres a thousand variables. They do make 245/45/20 tire. Is this the same profile as my stock 18s? Will they fit on stock suspension?

I wouldn't use that size.. With 20s, I wouldn't go more than 30 or 35 series tires..

Stock 18s have 245-45/40-18 tires.. So using that thickness on a wheel that's 2 inches bigger is not the same.

Stock suspension with 20s should have 35 series tires.
