Default Long Trips On Aftermarket Rims & Tires

What's your opinion on taking long trips on aftermarket rims and tires?

I just bought a set of 20" rims and tires about 4 months ago and I've put MAYBE 2k miles on them. I'm going to be taking a trip in July. I'm going from Los Angeles to Albuquerque, NM, which is 800 miles 1 way. I'm thinking a total trip of about 2k miles in about 2 weeks.

In that case, stick to the new wheels. Just be careful around bumps, lugs are tight, etc.. You should be good.

Drive as you would for any other trip. Granted you won't "know" the roads so just be aware.

I never put my stocks back on.. I bought new tires in Jan and already have 15k on them... I inspect my tires weekly and before each extended trip... Check for pressure and anything stuck in tires and you should be good... Put nitrogen in tires if you can... Pressure maintains and "supposedly" better gas mileage...

I think using the 20s is ok, just make sure the tire pressure is good. It's going to be really hot going through the desert. Are you stopping by in Phoenix? Let me know if you need anything if you're in the area.

It should be fine, as any wear 'n tear you'll get on the road trip, you'll probably get during normal driving. Just stay vigilante with preventive maintenance.

i drove from ct to virgina , south carolina , florida and back on my 22's.it was well over 3,000 miles. the only state i had problems was fuckin N.Y. I hit a monster pothole on the highway and cracked a rim and messed up a tire. just to have the local brooklyn shop beat it back into shape in the back of a box truck. not fun to watch let me tell you. just watch the way the roads are and you'll be fine.

what i cant get is that people will drive locally 15-20k on the streets but will say hell no on long freeway drives.

im lost to that logic

True. I only mentioned the swap becuz of the comfort of the ride. I'm sure you know thinner tires will make you feel the road more, and if I'm driving that much distance, that's the last think I need to tolerate. Plus 20's are heavier than stock = lower MPG.

Another reason is damaging the 20s in case of potholes, etc.. You can only pay so much attention to the road, and sometimes we just slip once and BAM a pothole comes and bends the wheels. Stock wheels with thicker tires will at least have more cushion for those conditions.

I get the logic behind it. It's partially why we swap for winter. But to me, it's a hassle to do it. PLUS I want people in all states to know my girl has shoes too. Maybe I'm just egotistical hahaha.

I feel ya on that. Never wanna have the "stock" look unless im lowered a bit with a turbo under my hood pushing 400whp lol. I wouldn't mind the stock look at that point.

I guess my worry is bending the rim, but I'll just drive carefully.

I love rolling into ABQ with the Max, especially now with the 20s. I don't think I've seen any fixed-up Max, and there are 2 things I'll be representing, Cali and My6thGen.org. I want to make sure the car looks clean, and you can't pull that off with stockies.

I'm sure the ride will be a bit rough down the 40, but for the most part that freeway isn't bad, just gotta worry about the 10 and the 15. Sorry kidd4l, I'm going up the 40, thanks for the offer tho.

I wouldnt only because I dont know the roads... you dont want to hit a crater and bend or crack your rims.

This thread has started me thinking about my later this summer trip to Myrtle Beach. The wife had commented that she'd though I'd want to take the car so my brothers can see it... I was thinking about taking her Ford Edge just because I think it'd be more comfortable. Her concern surprisingly enough to me is MPG. Some of the comments about not knowing the roads make good sense... some of the comments about looking good regardless of where you are also make sense...

I'm going to have to think about this a bit more myself before I decide...

I say roll stock. What if you get a flat. Do you have a 20" spare in yah trunk? How would the ride look and feelthen...rolling around with 3 20's and a stock 18 or a steelie whichever it is you have. That's just my opinion.

what i cant get is that people will drive locally 15-20k on the streets but will say hell no on long freeway drives.

im lost to that logic
It's ALWAYS NY. I drove from here to Charlotte and back lowered. The only place where I had trouble was here in NY. I don't see how this is the "greatest city in the world" when the streets resemble the craters of the moon.
