Default How to Properly Smoke Your Taillights

As I search the forum I do not see many people with smoked tail lights. So I figured I would shed some light on how to properly do the job. I do not have many pictures of the work involved in this job but it is easy.

Supplies:
Paint Gun
600 grit wet sand paper
Black (or deep black) automotive paint
Automotive Clearcoat (you will also need the hardener and activator)
masking tape

If you do not feel like doing this yourself then you can take it to a body shop and have them tackle the job but it is very simple

Step 1:
Remove tail lights from car

Step 2:
Tape all of the bulb holes closed so that no water gets inside the lens

Step 3:
Wash the tails with soap and water

Step 4:
begin wet sanding the tail lights lenses, make sure to scuff the entire surface of the lens thoroughly. the paint won't stick to shiny spots.

Step 5:
Wash the tails with soap and water again

Step 6:
Mask all areas of the tail lights off that will not be painted

Step 7:
Mix the clearcoat according to the specifications, you only need enough to do about 3-6 coats on the taillights.

Step 8:
Add a small amount of black paint to the clearcoat mixture, You ideally want about a 6 to 1 ish mixture. The more black you put in, the less coats you have to put on, but you really want to put down at least 3 coats. A little black goes a long way.

Step 9:
Mix together thoroughly and find a nice clean place to spray some paint

Step 10:
Spray the tail lights evenly and at the same time. Also make sure that the coats are wet enough, you don't want your tails being all rashy. Allow about 10-15 minutes between coats to prevent running. Continue putting coats on until you reach your desired darkness. If you do not feel that the tint mixture is getting dark fast enough, don't be afraid to add a little more black to the mixture.

the end result (yes i know this is not on a maxima but the results are the same) If you picked a clean enough spot to paint then you will not need to color sand and buff the paint job, it should be smooth and glossy, not dull and nasty looking like niteshades.

This is a great way to do it and I would also say the proper way,but not all of us have access to this kind of equipment.

To be honest I did mine with Niteshades and it came out pretty damn nice. Cost me less than 20.00

Nice write up!

Step 11:

Get pulled over by a cop and get a fix-it ticket for smoked tails

Step12:

Get on the org and look for stock tails

Jk

I just used a vinyl overlay. If I catch any static from the police I can peel it off.
