Default 245's and Lowering

Last night on my way home from work I blew out my front drivers side tire. After closer inspection,it almost seems like something was rubbing on it. The damage was on the inside edge of the tire. Its been doing that for a while,because you can see the steel treads showing all around the edge.

Now Ive had these 245 35 20's on my Max for several years with no problems at all. Now Im lowered with Progress springs,has anyone had any issues like this?

Best way is to lift the car and see what hits at normal ride height. If the tires hang down you wont find it unless you can see something scraped or shiny that is near the right area.

What is the condition of the other front tire? does it look the same? sounds like the camber is off. did you have the car aligned after it was lowered.

The other is OK. I had it aligned but you cant adjust the camber on our cars. Im goingto have to try to find camber bolts. The guy at the tir place thought it was camber as well.

Sounds like an alignment prob. You can buy a camber kit. most likely its not rubbing just wear. Get the alignment checked again. cars alway get outa alignment always!

Funny you should ask that. My wife's TL is doing that now, and I just bought a tire monday. We had this issue before and we got an alignment doen and the problem went away, now 2 1/2 years later, it's back. So I got the alignment doen, but the tech said that it's just the cambe of the car made to hold in sharp corners.

Sounds like just a coincidence to me. There's nothing in that area that could be rubbing it. Only thing the tire could rub on is the splash guard and that will not put a hole in it.

It wore in a very strange way,even the tech thought it was strange.It only wore on the very edge.

A couple of things he told me that I did wrong. I need to check the aligment more often. The place that aligned it for me offers a 12month warranty,so basically I can take it back and they'll adjust for free for a year. He said even a speed bump can throw off the align.

I also didnt rotate the tires. The reason for that is becase my tires are not the greatest,the ones in the back are very bad. Im goingto be replacing all four tires and I will rotate more frequently. With this type of tire they suggest once a month. Its free anyway..

well, i dont have lowering springs... but i had a shop do my alignment a while back and they completely effed it up. so i was just trying to see what my options are. the outsides of my tires are as smooth as a baby's bottom. lol.

ill get my shop to do an alignment and we will see where i am from there. sorry to threadjack!!

Now that I have installed new tires Im trying to pay a little more attention to rubbing.

I noticed yesterday I still have some "rubbing or grinding" noise. It seems more noticeable when Im going around turns. After I heard the noise I started to research it a little.

It seems to me like the tire is actually rubbing on the spring perch of the strut when the suspension is compressed. Is this possible? Can I put a spacer in the fronts to push the tire out more?

I was really looking closely at the tire that blew and its the only thing that could rub.

What's the offset of your wheel? Maybe it's too high of an offset and the wheel is set too close to the suspension.

It's weird that it's only occurring on 1 side. Maybe the spring on that side is not properly installed.

I thought so too. Its not hitting the spring though, just the bottom of the spring perch itself.

Is it possible to put a spacer in there? It doesnt need very much at all.
