Default Steering Wheel Switch Not Working...Help

Steering Wheel switch works intermittently. I can get it to start working by holding the volume switch and turning the wheel. The side with the cruise control works just fine. Any ideas? And how hard is it to fix?....thx

If the switch itself is bad, you'll need to replace it. You can pull the airbag and have the switch removed in under 10 minutes...it isn't difficult. If you know anybody else with a 6.5 gen, maybe you could swap switches for a moment to troubleshoot the problem?

Cool, was making sure there wasn't some sort of safety device in the wheel that keeps it from working unless the wheel was straight.

Disconnect the car battery and let the car sit for 20 minutes. Look on the backside of the steering wheel airbag trim at about the 4 and 8 O'clock positions and you will see a small plastic button at either position. Pop those 2 buttons out, and remove the two bolts...I believe that they are 10mm, if I remember correctly. Once you have the bolts removed, you can lift the airbag out, straight back towards you. Disconnect the airbag plugs from the bag and set it aside. You can now lift the switches out. The radio switch wires coming from the swith terminate in a plastic plug that plugs into a wire harness that is located behind the airbag. Make sure that the plug is fully seated, and also that none of the wires are frayed, or pulled out of the plug. If all is well, you can carefully remove the circuit board from the backside of the steering wheel switchplate. The other end of the wires are hard soldered to the circuit board. Do a visual inspection and make sure that none of the wires have broken free from the board. If all is well, then I would guess that your switch is bad and is going to need to be replaced.

Took me long enough to try this......I removed the airbag but the switch will not come out. Are there clips? Pulling the hell out of the thing, don't want to break it!

Default Re: Steering Wheel Switch Not Working...Help

The switch is plugged into the steering wheel under the airbag module. If the switch itself is bad, it can be replaced. If the problem is in the wiring, then you may end up ripping out the entire steering wheel/column. The switches are "clipped" in. Once you have the airbag out, they should be pretty easy to pry out. Once you have them out, just follow the wire harness that is soldered to the switch...it terminates at a plastic plug...the plug is near the 9 O'clock position (if I remember correctly) under the airbag.

There is a gyro assembly under the steering wheel that allows the wheel to spin and still maintain electrical contact with the electronics in the steering wheel (don't remember what it is called). If your problem lies there, then it is going to be a much more involved process.

I'm not sure if you can get to it just by pulling the steering wheel, or if you are going to have to tear into the steering column...
