Default Rocker Switch Light Stays On

Hey guys, so I installed a fog light rocker switch, but here's the problem

The rocker switch has an led light inside it

When I put it in "on" mode, it turns my fog lights on, but the led inside the switch turns OFF

When I put it in "off" mode, it turns my fog lights off, but the led inside the switch turns ON

usually it would be the opposite, and it kind of scares me because I was at the gym and when I came back the switch was kind of hot I'm guessing it's from the led being on the whole time.

Usually the led inside the switch would turn on when the fog lights are on, but in this case the led in the switch turns off when my fog lights are on and turns on when my fog lights are off

Do you guys think I have a defective switch or is there anyway to fix this? I contacted the seller on eBay and I'm waiting for his reply, but I came here to see if I can get a temporary solution

Thanks in advance for any help

No bro. There's 3 connections, one for the positive switch to battery, the positive for the electrical device and the ground, should I switch up the positives?

Make sure you have the ground wire on the correct terminal on the switch.

You should have 3 terminals on the bottom of the switch...you have your wires on the wrong terminals. There should be 1 + and 1 - , and 1 switched terminal. Th switcheded terminal controls the switch for the fogs, the other plus and minus are the power/ground for the switch. The switch terminals should be marked.

1. Remove ALL wires from the switch.
2. Ground the switch to a good ground using the proper terminal on the switch.
3. Connect your constant power to the + terminal. Turn on the switch and see if the LED is on. If so, connect your fog lead to the other terminal.
4. If your LED does not light, move the constant power to the other terminal and check again.

If you have a test light, it is very simple to test the switch and the wires...

Assuming you only had the positives reversed, the only thing that would do is constantly keep the LED on regardless of the position of the switch, the switch would still function to control the fog lights. The switch should not get hot because of the LED unless the LED either is somehow being overdriven (I'm assuming the switch has a resistor since the LED is built-in) or the LED is being improperly driven. Hopefully you didn't reverse the voltage on the LED since that'd more than likely damage it.

I removed all the wires and rewired it here's what I did

1)the constant power terminal is hooked up straigh to the battery
2)the switched terminal is where the positive of the fog lights are hooked up
3)the negative terminal is connected to the negative post on the battery

The switch functions how it's supposed too now, but the led inside the switch doesn't turn on at all anymore, do you think the led got damaged?

When I switched the positives the led still stayed on constantly but it didn't control the fog lights at any more, but I rewired everything and it worked fine but the led doesn't turn on at all anymore

I have to agree the LED probably is messed up. Any reason you ran the ground straight to the battery versus a chassis ground? Length of the ground maybe having an issue as well?

Hmm, that's a good question, do you think it's better too ground on the chassis then to the battery?

By constant I mean regardless of whether the switch is on or off. Your original problem was that the LED was on when the switch was off, and the LED was off when the switch was on, which shouldn't happen if only the positives are reversed. Either it was wired incorrectly, something is missing, or you had a faulty switch. If you want to test the LED, connect the ground pin to ground and the switch pin (not the constant pin) to 12V and see if it lights up. Then connect the constant pin to 12V and flick the switch on and off and see if it lights up. If it doesn't light in either case, it's definitely damaged.

Short grounds are better, you don't have to wire it all the way back to the battery.
