Default Kicker L7 Solobaric

I recently installed a kicker l7 15 with a true 600 watt rms alpine amp in my max and I am wondering if I should switch boxes. This is the first time I have ever had a ported box and I am unsure if I like it. The box is the correct size as far as I can tell. Outer measurements meet what is recomended online. MY question is (a) should I try and spin sub and face it towards the interior instead of towards trunk (b) Should I switch to a sealed box for better highs and more room or (c) wait till I upgrade hu and then tune system and decide on box. I am unsure on if the sound is right the lows are amazing but it seems as if on the highs the port causes a sound as if it can't push the air out right. Like I said first ported box just looking for insight.

First off I'd say you need more power. Maybe twice what you have. Those subs like a ported box.

Are you looking for SPL or SQ?

I have the L7 solo baric as well, and I had a custom box made for mine. The solo baric speakers do not do well in ported boxes. I also have a 1000w fosgate pushing it. My speaker is facing the trunk and granted the dreaded license plate rattles like crazy, it sounds much better facing the rear.

I have 2 l7s 750 each and I'm feeding them from 1700-1800 no problems and they slam depending on the song since it is ported and louder on certain frequencies. I would give it more power, a bit more than the RMS but clean non distorted power. But that's my opinion, others should have different inputs.

I see a lot of people have l7's. I did some research on them and don't see anything special about them. Except they were a fad a couple of years ago. Seems to me there are better speakers on the market.... Just wondering..

Yes there are better out there. I have Cvr's and Cvx's and they never gave me any trouble with many hours of day abusive playing so I stayed with kickers lol.

Ive never seen or heard a Kicker sub that wasnt in a ported box. If you look at their sub/box combs they are all ported.

Im assuming you guys are all using pre-fab boxes?? For the most part a pre fab box sucks. They are built very general. A sub like an L7 or CVX needs a proper box and port size to work efficiently.

I was assuming that 600 want enough but for 100 for everything I was just using it for now and I have a stock hu which I know will not sound as good as an aftermarket hu. MY biggest problem was the awkard sound that comes out of the port on highs. This is my first ported box and was not sure as I have always thought sealed sounded better but on the square L7 I have always seen a ported box used. I may try a custom built ported box and see if that sounds better as well as upgrade to new hu

You have to remember there are a lot and I mean a lot of factors that go into great sound. A car is a terrible environment. This is where proper deadening and install become very important. Also, quality of equipment. Cheap isnt always good. Some times it just means cheap sound. Im not trying to be a dick or any thing but its the truth. People are amazed at how my systems sound, and yes they do sound good, but I spend more on RCA cables then they spend on their whole system. I really enjoy it and want the most out of my system. I dont "cheap out or skimp".

You have a ways to go to achieve your goals. If you really want the sound youre chasing after stick with it. Keep learning and moving forward and you'll get there. Dont for a second though think that 100.00 worth of equipment will get you there. Its more of a stepping stone. Good luck!!

Ya know what, we've all been there when it comes to car audio. We don't have alot of money to spend at first, but we want to BUMP. What do you have your settings on the amp set to? What level is the gain (gain control should not be construed as a volume knob) and what is the low pass filter set too, and if the amp has bass boost, what is that set to?

I have a 8" SA 8v2 D2 in my Max, and I am pushing 800rms to it. So like others have said, that 15 is not getting power. The RMS rating on subs made these days, are a little under rated to keep things safe and from burning up voice coils and other things. As my sub is rated at 500rms, it can easily handle up to 1000 rms if things are setup properly
