Default I Need Advice From The Audio Gurus

So after installing my new MTX subs, I'm thinking about getting a new amp to run them. The problem is, I SUCK AT A/V STUFF! I can install it, but I have no idea what pieces to put together to install! I currently have an MTX 4 channel amp, I don't remember what watt it is. The new subs I installed are MTX Thunder 5500. The paper says the recommended power rating is 100-200 watts RMS. They have dual 4 ohm voice coils.

I think I'm wanting to get a 2 channel amp that would run the subs between the 100-200 watts that is recommended. HELP ME PICK OUT AN AMP! I'm sure I can't afford something as good as JL, but maybe something along the lines of another MTX or a Rockford Fosgate. Thanks!

Get a mono amp, say you'll stay in the middle and run 150 watts rms to each sub, you'll need a 300 rms amp, are the subs single voice coil or dual?

They are dual 4 ohm voice coils. I have them wired in parallel which makes them 2 ohm (according to the paperwork, I have no idea what I'm talking about).

They are 8", like factory size. I listen to almost all types of music, from Usher to Metallica, Alan Jackson to AC/DC, The Beatles to the Black Eyed Peas.

Sounds like a 2 channel amp. Alpine or Rockford. Remember a high power amp doesn't mean clean power. I have a 14 year old Phoenix Gold ZX350 amp I use to run my one 12 inch sub. They just don't make him like the old Phoenix Gold amps.

I'd look for a 2 channel amp that could do 300-400wpc at 4 ohms. You usually want more power than you need and turn the gains down.

There really is no "standard" for an RMS rating, it more of a suggestion. You more likely to blow a 100 watt sub with 100 watts than if you gave it 500 watts. Reason is clipping or distortion, thats what kills speakers. If you feed a speaker more power the amp will dig a little deeper and give you more "clean power" than a clipped or distorted signal.

What price range do want to be in? Rockford is eh. I'll find you a nice amp in a price range you're looking for.

A mono amp for those subs would have to run at either 1 or 4 ohms. So you would need 400x1 at 4 ohms preferably to run cooler. I would probably lean you towards an amp that would run 200x2 at 2 ohms.... iIt wouldn't be as expensive as the mono running the 400x1 at 4ohms.

That's too much power for those little subs.

Everyone seems to have differing opinions on whether Mono is better or a 2 channel. What are the pros and cons of each?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but your amp has NO idea how many subs you are running, so your power is not split between the number of subs. Your amp puts out a given wattage which is determined by the load on the amp. If your subs TOTAL a 2ohm load, and your amp is rated at 500w @ 2ohms, then everything connected to that amp is getting 500w. Your amp is not capable of directing specific amounts of power over a given channel.
