Well, what kind of power is the amp putting out? What are the speakers rated at? You didnt give nearly enough info to be able to help.

Remember its better to give more power to speakers than not enough. Distortion or clipping is what kills your speakers...

You can power them with whatever you want...HOWEVER, if they are rated for 100w rms , and you feed them 400w rms and play them at full bore, then don't expect them to last forever.

If they are rated for 180w rms then 100w rms should not even make them break a sweat...just make sure you set the gains properly on your amp.

OK, first, those JBL GTO638's are only 2ohm speakers according to JBL's site. They are also only rated for 60w rms...180w PEAK.

The Rockford amp that you linked to will do 100w/4 @ 2ohms. As long as you set your gains correctly I wouldn't think that you would have any issues. Personally, if you are looking at the GTO638 for the front doors, I would skip them and get a decent set of components instead...just my opinion.

The first amp you listed will be fine. The speakers would only see 100w if the gains are set right to the wire and you listen to your music at full blast. Just use common sense when setting the gains and you will be fine. My front comps are rated at 140w/rms...I'm feeding them 350w/rms...have been for over 2 years now with NO issues. My gains are set VERY conservatively, and I don't crank the music (too often!).

Either will work fine. For me personally, I prefer to over-amp and just keep my gains in check.

Anything above 150w is plenty IMO. Plus you wont be sending all of that power to the speakers unless you max out the amp. If you have the funds, i'd get the larger amp. Larger power headroom is preferred.

You can't burn a speaker by under-powering either, so no worries on that aspect.

I'm going to slightly disagree. I bet if you ask installers most people blow their speakers by under powering them. Especially younger people. They will try to crank them beyond the limits of the amp....clip...distortion...boom!!

All quality speakers can take 1000 watts with a proper install, set up and tuning.

The thing is...all voice coils have a thermal limit. If you don't exceed the coil's thermal limit, it will not burn. The speaker may sound like complete poop though when fed a clipped signal. I have yet to see a speaker get fried when being fed too little power.
