Default Extending Battery Cables?

Hey guys, so i got my dad a redtop battery for christmas online and it happened to be that it didnt fit his SUV, it fit in the battery location etc but the terminals are on the wrong side (got a reverse polarity) out of all the cars in my family his happens to not be reversed polarity...go figure. Anyways today he was still driving with the original battery and it died out so we were beginning to replace it when we noticed the terminals were on the wrong side. I have all the supplies to extend the wires but is this safe to do with just butt connectors? any help will be appreciated thanks! by the way, i only need to extend each about 6 inches

I bought it online, and you can't return stuff like batteries so in order to get the right battery I would have to sell this one and wait til someone buys it, ship it, get the money, and then buy the proper one, an my dads SUV is dead so we need it asap

I think it would be ok, as long as you use a large gauge wire.

I would solder the connection and shrink tube or crimp in vise and shrink tube.

you could also just buy longer cables. soldering may not be a good idea due to the amount of heat that will be transferred through the wires and plus, the engine bay is just a hot place. a good solid crimp with heat shrink tubing should work.
