Default What Brake Pad Is Better OEM or Aftermarket?

what's up M6G?! Well like the title says " What is a better brake pad OEM or aftermarket?" My rear brake pad is worn down, I might have 2 or 3 more days of use but I want to go tomorrow and atleast buy some brake pads so on tuesday I can get all 4 replace even though my front brake pads have about 70% left. The brake pads on the car are OEM and was replace about a year ago, I don't need no extereme racing brake pads, I don't be speeding but I'm curious what everyone else is using? I usually go to Arch auto parts and buy BeckArnly Ceramic or Wagner Ceramic pads.

So please tell me what is a good brake pad to go with the OEM Brake Rotors?

OEM? or Aftermarket?

and if you choose aftermarket, what brand you recommend and if possible why?

A lot of guys us the Hawk pads...don't go too aggressive on the pads, or they'll just eat your rotors up. If all you do is street driving, I've always used Duralast Gold pads from Autozone on every brake job I've ever done...they give great pedal feel, and work great. They also have a lifetime warranty against defects AND wear!

You have alot of options for pads. Personally i tend to brake aggressively from time to time and the stock pads did an alright job but the stock rotors just didn't do it for me. The first time they warped at at 12k miles, then repeatedly at 20k, and 31k. The dealer would turn them and all would be well. When it happened a fourth time at 38k miles i replaced the stock rotors with EBC slotted and drilled rotors and the pads with EBC red stuff pads. I drove very aggressively the first 2k miles on them trying to get them to warp before the warranty ran out of them. They still haven't warped, even after braking at 140mph. That would have immediately warped the stock rotors.

yes I heard of EBC, I forgot to mention that my Rotors were replace a year ago along with the brake pads, not that it needed to be replace in the 1st place.

I had Duralast on my last car which was a 99 Accord, the price was good and i had lifetime warranty on it

let me ask one more question, if i go aftermarket should i go Organic Pads Metallic Pads or Ceramic Pads? or if there is something else anybody recommends

BTW thanks for the info on the Duralast and EBC brakes

Def not OEM considering since there are better options as mentioned in the above posts.

Default Re: What Brake Pad Is Better OEM or Aftermarket?

For the type of driving I do, Duralast Gold pads/rotors will do fine by me. If I start having rotor warp issues, then I'll invest in a good set of rotors (EBC/Alien/etc...). My boy-racer days are long behind me, I'm just out to enjoy the ride now!

LaCuRa,

If you get the Duralast pads, get the Duralast Gold...they are the better pad...I think the regular Duralast are terrible. The regular Duralast are a very cheap pad, and you definitely get what you are paying for. The Duralast Golds have served me very well throughout the years, and you can't beat the lifetime warranty! When you wear them out, get a new set, and return the old ones in the box, and you're good to go!

As far a Ceramic vs Metallic/Semi-Metallic, this is my understanding. The ceramics will be quiet and produce less dust, but they do not have the best initial bite until they get warmed up. The metallic/semi-metallic have great initial bite, but they could be noisy and they will produce more dust. Also, the metallics will be harder on the rotors. I've never used ceramics...most of my drives are short distances, and I don't have the drive time to allow the pads to get up to temp.

I also have Duralast Gold on the front, with stocks in the back rotors. Haven't had any problems with them, with minimal dust, and good bite.

wow now alot of you guys recommend OEM after i got aftermarket pads lol, well i bought Bendix Ceramic Pads, AutoZone didn't have my rear pads in stock had to be order in for tomorrow morning so i just went across the street to Arch and got my pads there.

Question: Does anybody know a place in NYC that i can go get a set of Cross Drill Slotted rotors? without me have to place a order in, i just want to go buy them and install them tomorrow along with the brake pads

Stick with the Wagner's for good all around everyday performance, if you want to really kiss the steering wheel, then get yourself a set of hawk hps's. unfortunately for most of these guys they live on the west coast and are limited with their autoparts store options, duralast pads are mediocre at best, if you need to go the cheaper route, go with Wearever Golds you can pick those up at you local Advance Auto Parts.

I wouldn't hit my dog in the tail with the regular DuraLast pads. The DuraLast GOLDS however, have served me well on EVERY vehicle I've put them on. I use them on every brake job I do, and I haven't had one complaint yet. Great pedal feel, and very good stopping power. My car isn't a track car, it's a daily driver. I don't drive it like I stole it. I've never had any stopping problems with the DuraLast Gold pads. The lifetime warranty is just an added bonus.

I used the regular DuraLast pads ONCE, and I replaced them 10 days later...ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! NO pedal feel, and they did NOT want to stop the car. I went with the Golds, and I find them to work great. For the guy that doesn't want to spend $60-$120 on a set of brake pads, I don't think you can go wrong with them.

Funny this came up, I had a long discussion with my mechanic yesterday. We we were talking about how OEM parts are truly the beast for our cars as they put the time and effort into making them work specifically for "OUR" cars. Brake pads might be a bit of a different story but talking more mechanical, like the axle I know have to replace...

I went with the PBR ceramic pads which work great but the continue to squeak and probably won't stop according to most people I have talked to. I had Hawk before and they were great too...no squeakie!

for everyone that has squeeks,

smear a bit on the shims where the piston clamps and this should resolve your noise

J, you can get similar stuff at any local auto parts store:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...ntifier=160545

I've used other stuff from AutoZone that came in a small foil wrapper...can't remember the name, but it was hanging on a rack right near the register. It was a blue "paste" that you spread on the back of the pad, and any contact points on the caliper.

Yups J , you can get this at your local store, I would also recommend using Copper gasket spray on the shims, or if you got the money go with these,
http://hardbrakes.com/

Titanium Brake Heat Shields for guys that do hardcore racing , they arent cheap but a good investments,

Im acutally using these along with Cermanic BrakeMan Pads
