Default Struts?

So I really don't know about struts. My car is handling really bad all of a sudden. Mostly while turning, it leans so bad in the front. Feels like the wheel is going to curve under the car and fall on its side. Is this the struts or something else? 82,000 miles on stock suspension. Lowered on progress springs since 2006

Do you hear or feel anything else? Is it only when turning one direction or both?

The front right wheel has been making a knocking sound when going over a bump or driveway. I think its my brakes but while braking I sometimes get a very loud metal sound, like something is falling off or in the way. Oh and its been creaking since I installed the progress springs.

Did you install the Progress springs on the OEM struts? I hate to tell you this, but if yoiu have 80K miles on your struts, you're due for new struts. They are only rated for 50K miles. Also, check your ball joints, tie rod ends, and your sway bar end links. If you have a broken sway bar endlink, you would get some severe leaning in corners.

Thanks, I'll have a shop look at all those things. On fast turns it feels like the front rim is going to buckle inward.

Brother, save your money and look at them yourself. Get one of the front wheels off of the ground, and grab the wheel at 12 and 6 and try to wiggle it up/down. If you have movement, then you have a ball joint issue. Grab the wheel at 3 and 9 and try to wiggle it back/forth...make sure the steering wheel is locked...if you have movement, then you have a tie rod issue. You can visually inspect your sway bar links...take a look and see if any of them are broken. Pop the hood, and remove the plastic covering both strut mountes. Look at the top of the strut piston as it sits in the mount. Is it centered in the mount, or off to one side? Cheeto had his off-centered...bad strut mounts.

Keep us posted.

Could also be the lower control arm bushings, after a while it does become loose and eventually you feel like you're gonna rollover. Also do the bounce test. Which is pushing down the front or rear of the car, if it bounces freely you're struts are shot.

Bounce test doesn't work as well with McPherson struts as it did with the older shocks. Have somebody follow you down the highway and have them keep checking your wheel contact with the pavement. If your wheels are constantly bouncing instead of maintaining contact...struts/shocks are shot.

If you have a jackstand, you can do it yourself in a few minutes. Don't keep driving the car if it's that bad...it is only going to get worse, and you don't need/want to have an accident.

OP you did say you hear a knocking sound on turn, may even be your axels. They start to tick and have that knocking sound you described as a tell tale sign.

Also OP please dont drive the car if you can and get this fixes asap. I would hate to see a thread showing us your wheel falling off and subsequent accident. Dont play wiht your life bro.

Could have axle problems, but he's got something else going on if the front end feels loose.

Well I just paid attention to my tires and they look almost bald(correction) the edges look worn but the center seems to have more tread.. They only have about 5K miles on them. Goodyear GT. Thats not normal wear. My last tires HP all got bubbles in only 2k miles and I got they replaced with the the GT tires. Don't think they will dish out new tires again. The car has good power but whats the point now.

If the tires are that worn at 5K mileage, you have a serious alignment issue. Probably being caused by whatever is wrong with your front end. Stop driving the car and have it checked...it is not safe to drive at this point.

Since its freezing outside. I think the suspension got stiffer or frozen. I notice the car is turning like it used to. It doesn't lean at all.

Not yet. I've been so busy with the home front. The local shops are booked up and I will not take it to the dealer.

I spend maybe 20minutes in it per day. To and from my job is 2miles. The car don't even warm up. Guess I'm neglecting the car.

You really need to find the time to get the front end looked at. If you're chewing through tires that quickly, then something is definitely out of whack. It may not be safe to be driving the car.

Default Re: Struts?

Ever find the issue here? I have a similar issue I'm about 9k miles in now on progress springs on oem everything else. I hear a similar sound from right wheel on small bumps and when I turn my wheel fully to the left there is a rubbing sound, like rubber on metal or something, and only from right wheel. Wonder if it's same issue or early signs at least.

Think I just need new struts?

Default Re: Struts?

I thought you guys heard the news... everything under my car needs work. Struts,axles/cv boots, lower engine mount and god knows what else. This is what happens when you drive everyday on lowering springs. My tires rub the wheel wells and sometimes the front chassis smacks the ground. Keep in mind I drive like I stole it But I feel after using progress since 2007, its ruff on the car. Regular inspections would have prevented this issue. Dealer says about $1150 of work without the struts.
