Default Need Springs Installed!!!

Is there anyone in the Chicago/Milwaukee area that is willing to help me out with installing my springs?

I'm very mechanically inclined and am sure I could do them myself, but I would feel more comfortable if someone were to give me a hand. Someone who has done them before and actually knows what they are doing.

I have a mechanic who would do them and give me an alignment for $200 but if I could save that money and learn while dong them... priceless!

If youre mechanical it really is a very easy job. Autozone rents compressors for free. Just some basic hand tools and youre set. Trust me..you can do this. Im so good at it now I can take mine apart and put it back together in a hour.

Just something to be careful of. The CV boots...when I did it the first time I wasnt paying attention and the strut nicked the boot and put a tiny, tiny tear in it. Within a week there was grease everywhere. That cost me 160.00

If you can get it to me, I'll be more than willing to help you out...

You're about 5 hours away...I've got the compressor and impact tools if you want to make a road trip.

Follow these instructions http://forums.maxima.org/6th-generat...ions-pics.html and you can do it! I did mine in about 4 hours, front and rear. That's probably the biggest/most complicated job I've done so far and it really felt good once I was finished!

$200 with alignment? Damn, thats not a bad deal....around here alignments go for $80-90, but if you really want to do it youself...give it a wing.

I was the same way, but it wasn't an option for me - I had no one to help. The first wheel you do on the front and back will be a little of a learning experience. But then you will be able to do the other side in half the time. Air tools aren't a necessity but they sure do make this job a lot easier! I probably wouldn't do it again w/o them.

Yea, I have the tools to do them.

I guess I'm more worried about everything sitting right and noise issues.

I have no noise problems at all. One weird thing that did happen though - after I got done installing the rear springs, the rear actually sat HIGHER than with the stock springs. I WAS FREAKED OUT! I took it for a drive, let everything settle, got an alignment and then everything was fine.

Just make sure you put everything right, but it's pretty easy. Like officerfrasher said, once you do one side the other side will be much easier. It's always nice to have someone there with you tho, that's for sure.

Not yet. Just got em in the mail yesterday.

I think I might just take it to my guys oil change place and do em myself. I know I can do it, would just like some peace of mind with someone more experienced.

Changing struts and springs is very easy job as long as you have right tools. I did it many times in parking lot with the tools that I have in my small tool box.

Get these stuff handy.....

1) Hand gloves are must
Click the image to open in full size.

2) Hollow but strong pipe to leverage force....something like this

3) PB blast....spray one day before on every nuts and bolts

4) And most important is spring compressor......I have seen many folks uses borrowd spring compressor from auto parts store. However the best and almost 99% secure spring is the one I have always used. You can not rent that from any store but you can buy that for under $40. I have the same one and it served me good all the time. here it is....

5) Rest of the disassemble and assemble-back steps you can find everywhere. When I did this job first time then I found one DIY that is pretty close enough. I have attached that file here.

Hope this helps you and others who are new to suspension work.

Thanks man!

I ended up doing them myself a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't too bad. I knew I was more than capable of doing them... just wanted some guidance from someone experienced.

As requested!

This was taken right after I installed them. It's settled a little more.

Good write up man.

I had tried some spring compressors from Harbour Freight, but they jammed on me. I rented a set from Advance Auto Zone and they look just about identical to the ones you posted. They were definitely a much better set!

That's what I used. $50 to rent and then you get your money back when you return em!
