Default Braking Issue?

A little info on my car, 124k on it. I've owned it for about 3 years now. This started two days ago on my way to class. When I brake my car makes this noise that sounds and feels like I'm braking on snow and slipping. My car is sliding while I am braking. It sounds like a a clunking noises, continuously. Also, this started today, it sounds like a humming noise while I am driving and this happens only twice. Some of my friends said it can be an ABS problem, however, the light isn't on when that happens. None of my lights are on except for my windshield fluids lights. My cousin just tighten my calipers bolts and it still makes the noise and I am still slipping when I drive. He check my fluids for my brakes and are level and nothing is leaking. Any feedback is greatly appreciated before I resort to taking it to the dealership to look at.

sounds like a ABS sensor going bad. there held on by one 10mm bolt located on the wheel hub. try taking them out and cleaning them before buying new 1's.

have you had anyone replace a wheel bearing , axel , or any other repair in that area?

It's definitely an issue with the ABS system...either the sensor, or module.

ABS issue , the reason is since you change the rotors and pads , im betting there is alot of metal particals thats attracted on the abs sensor itself.

the sensor is a magnetic pick up and reads the teeth on the CV axles, if there is any axle grease or metal flakes from the pads being worn , it will read incorrectly and give you vibertion and/or noise like youve describe.

best bet is to clean it out really good with brake cleaner, 9 times out of 10 its your fronts , but if your cousin does mechanic work , he will know what to do.

pretty weird tho , if one was bad it would trigger the ABS light.

I guess your friend will have to trouble shoot which sensor it is.

In your experience, if the module is bad, will it act up all the time, or can it be intermittent?

Is it just me, or have there been quite a few threads of ABS module failure?

its intermittent on the 6th gen maximas.

I think and old memeber from south fl had that issue but it comes and goes, I check it before but that person sold the maxima due to tranny failures, so I never found out if they replaced the abs or not.

I know when my sensor was dirty it pulse thru my steering wheel, something I had never felt before, after I spray some brake cleaner on the abs sensor , that pulse went away, and I hope never to have to change that module.

I know on my cousin VR4 , the abs module was making a noise and even when you shut the car off the module sounded like it was stuck open and ticking, it wasnt cheap replacing that either.

I feel the friction only when I brake. It came back after we cleaned the sensors when I made a hard brake at the light on my way to visit my mom. Ever since that day (yesterday) I have the friction when I brake. The feeling like I'm braking slipping on snow and my brake makes that loud clunking noise and my brake pedals is fighting to brake with the clunking. I don't know how to explain it other than the explanation of slipping on snow while braking. Also, I don't feel it in my steering wheel though.

Did you check the "teeth" on the axles to make sure that they weren't gummed up with anything? Just a thought...

Your best bet at this point may be to pay the $100 Nissan diagnostic fee. You really don't want to buy an ABS module if you don't have to.

def sounds like the abs !!

and yes its very important to clean the teeth which gets a bit more messer, you collect so much brake dust, road debris and it builds up, doesnt help if theres grease from the cv axles that covers the teeth on the cv axles ends.

Sadly, with the cost of the module, and the cost of the sensors, a trip to the dealer may be your best bet. At least they will tell you what part is failing.

Well guys thanks for all the help I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!! My friend owns a mechanic shop and the abs light finally came on. He has the machine to read the code and it came up left rare and abs module. His opinion is maybe it is the cause of the left rare that is causing the abs module to read. However, he is just saying that right now until we fix the left rare.

So I bought the left rare wheel hub because he said it is probably the abs ring causing the sensor to not read correctly. I plan on changing the abs sensor and the ring. But for some reason the hub I bought which is from Nissan doesn't have the hole for the sensor. Right now, my last resort is letting Nissan fixing it. I was trying to save myself some money from their ridiculous hourly charge. But I will definitely let you guys know the outcome so future 6th geners know what to do.

Any errors and grammatical errors my apologies. My iPhone is lagging and I don't feel like rereading what I wrote.

mines acted up but it was the LEFT rear hub as well , I replaced mines with ease, did you get the part from Nissan ?

not sure why they wouldnt have a place for the ABS, I think the back is secure with a 10mm bolt, not sure why there would be a hole unless they sold you the wrong hub
