Default Air Bags vs Coilovers

Thinking about going for the "Slam Look" and i was just curious which of the 2 is better to go with living in nyc and commuting around the city. looking for the next best ride compared to stock. currently dropped on progress springs and stock struts. any input would be helpful. Thanks

Air dude. I specialize in air suspension for trucks though but same concept. I've had Coilovers and they ride stiff. I would not recommend them for a daily driver.I had them and sold them within two weeks. Air, if a good set up will ride like a Cadillac. That's why high end cars, a lot of muscle cars and classic cars have air suspension, rides great. Another advantage over coilovers, you don't have to adjust it by hand every time you want a different height. You jt hit a button and you go up and down. Maybe find out where this guy is and ask him how his ride was on air. He was selling his air suspension.

yeah depending on the air bag brand, ur def not gonna get the handling that coilovers give unless u get those ksports air tech. if u have a good 3 grand u can get a real good air bag system w good handling. i love my coilovers to death and trust me its as low as it can go.. so id say coilovers ftw! cheaper too

Default Re: Air Bags vs Coilovers

I've never been in anything with airride that road good, other then something like a caddy that came with it factory, a soft ride system. Anything else ive been in has been horrible, even though they were good quality kits.

Also, you have to consider your going to need to use alot of your trunk space for the compressors, tank, and usually a second battery if your going with a good kit. If your into great handling, then coilovers are the way to go. They are stiff, but thats because they're built to perform, not for the ride of a Caddy.

Consider that with an airbag system, there is alot more to go wrong (you can break a bag, a pump, compressor can go bad, blow lines) lot of BS to deal with, whereas coilovers are zero maintanence and all you have to worry about is blowing a strut, which is alot more unlikely then having problems with the bags.

A big part of the reason that classic cars get airride (especially pre-50's stuff), is because they can get on the ground with the touch of a button, but drive at the higher height. But they are also parking-lot cruisers or trailer queens most of the time, not a daily driver, so theres less of a chance for wear and tear to get to the bags. All the hot rod guys I grew up with HATE bags, so I dont know anyone with a muscle car that would ever put them in their car, they all run spring or coil setups, as air would make no sense because in a performance setup you want stiff.

and the stiffness also depends on what brand and model coilovers you get. some are fully adjustable! so i wouldnt worry about that

I must say i love em both... But im gonna have to side with air ride.. Granted u do lose some handling when u go the air ride but the simplicity of just hitting a switch is so much of a +1.. Im definately going this route when u get my truck

BTW: Doesnt Tein make a coliover kit that u can adjust from inside the car?

those are the main to reason im leaning more towards the coils. but the fact that i can hit a button and get the height i want is stopping me. i still have 2-3 months before i can buy either or. if i go for the air, ill be going for ksport air plus package.. if i go for coils ill be going for BC racings. please let me know if there are better options to go for either of them..

I forgot to add in my post but if you are after performance Coilovers FTW. If into cruising mostly Airbags. Easy decision. I know guys with muscle cars that have air bags, simply because they are not racing them, just show cars. I for one would not do air on a muscle car because I would drive he hell out of it, not baby it.

im usually after cruising.. trying to limit the speeding after getting 2 speeding tickets back to back.. but cant help it when ur standing at a light and some honda fool comes next to u and starts reving his engine like theres no tommorow or ur on the highway doing 55 and some idiot decides to tailgate you for a couple of miles and cut u off with his mommy's camry...

Bags then, they are not a delicate as some make them out to be and if installed correctly, they will ride nice and you have many benefits, lower and raise at the push of a button, will last longer the coilovers. Bags are cheap to replace versus a coilover and many more. I don't really race so I think I might go the air route in the future but I will deign my own system from scratch the way I like it.

The guy at the light, rev back like crazy, like you are going to take off and when light turns green, just take your foot of the brake pedal and coast.
