Default What Causes Cats To Crumble?

Hello.
I'm wondering here, what causes our cats to crumble? This happens occasionally on 5.5 and 6th gens, but what exactly causes this to occur? Is it just poor cat construction or a factor you can control and prevent from happening?

The consequences of cats crumbling are dire to the engine...
Thanks.

Usually from unburned fuel. Happens from bad spark plugs, misfires or bad o2 sensors. The unburned fuel hits the cat and causes it to burn hotter than what its suppose to which can melt or crack the ceramic which then causes blockage.

Another way it can fail is if the surface area that is suppose to create the catalytic reaction is coated with excessive soot or other contaminates such as coolant from a bad head gasket.

Interesting, I never knew what caused them to go bad.
