Default Precat Removal Time

Hey guys. Can anyone please give me their estimate on how long it should take to remove, gut, and reinstall the two front precats. I got a mechanic that said it should take him about five hours and I am not sure if he is telling me the truth. thanks

It sounds right, but it is a pain to get those off on a 6-9 year old car. If you trust your mechanic and he does good work id say do it. If not shop around and see if someone can cut this quote down.

Missfires, low compression, silverflake in your oil......etc.
Btw, you always have the option to have engine rebuild,(re-ring, bearings etc or complete engine replacement, depending on your decision and costs....

Change your PCV and add an oil separator.... Your oil is being sucked back nto the intake and being burnt by bank 2.

LOL, this forum is truly amazing I swear. One can never learn enough on this forum,. Always something new.

I am very interested in this too. Since my bank one cat needs to be replaced as my check engine light is on and dealer says I need to replace the cat by the firewall. I am thinking of just buying the racingline HFPC.

But how long can I drive with this cat like this before I change it without ruining my engine, LOL. Can this wait till tax time in February? Or will my engine be "kaput" by that time? I wish to know the urgency of this thing. My car still kinda drives great, lol.

How long you can go before the engine is dead is probably not something that can really put a time frame on (in my opinion, maybe @BurntOrangeAppeal can tell you different). It probably depends on when they started going bad and how fast they are degrading.

James nailed it right there. It really does depend when your cats started degrading. ..

The system is designed to use rear o2 sensors to monitor catalytic efficiency, however its also has safeguards build in in order to prevent accidental CEL tripping under its 2 trip cycle logic...
In simple terms the computer is looking for a duplicating pattern of rear o2 sensor activity to match the output fault. Often times as catalytic converts outputs are based on hydrocarbons, CO and NOX gasses, but also on catalytic temperature in order to lower such emission limits....by the time the computer detects a duplicated pattern within 2 continuous drive cycles, you catalytic converter is 1 leg in the grave....so in essence its very hard if not impossible to predict how long you have left since you don't know the starting point.
Its only going to get worse. Avoid driving, ESPECIALLY on cold engine as the ECM is in open loop and oxygen sensor activity is disregarded as the engine is flooded with fuel(not literally, but under fuel injection tables) and fuel kills cats, whether its running rich or driving with missfires.... and try to repair it as soon as you can.

Ugh! I hate when someone is as blunt as this. Saying everything right and very professionally. I think you are very correct.

Well, I will brave the odds for as long as I can. I need to get me some money then so that I can fix this thing. Ugh!! With christmas and some other family expenses, I don't know where this money will come from. Oh well, I will see.

In the same situation.. I've been running lean for a while now going through repairs & I think the Precats are problem.. They might be going and i'm getting a tin rattling nosie when I hit the gas. Also I have code p1283- Air Fuel Raito Sensor Lean Shift Monitoring Bank 2.. I have changed all the vac hoses and checked all my connections several times.. Not leaks at the intake and just installed new fuel injectors..
