Default Need Help With P1402 EGR System Code

Yesterday on my way home from work I noticed my SES light on so I plugged in the OBDII to check what it was and it comes up at P1402 EGR System. I reset the light and it has not come back up yet.

The only things I have noticed recenlty is a rough idle (Has been doing for a couple of months now) but not rough enough to shake the whole car you can usually only feel it at your feet.

On Monday I tried starting the car with the key and I had to hold it for a bit longer than usual and when it finally started it seemed like the rpm jumped a little bit higher.

When I accelerate hard enough the exhaust kind of stinks but everyone I've asked has said this is normal.

It has been a while since I ran any cleaner through the gas tank or fuel system, not sure if that would cause this.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

could have a leak in the EGR tube...you shouldn't be smelling exhaust bad when you get on it.

If your cats are clogged, it'd be cheaper to have a muffler shop cut them out and weld in new aftermarkets...unless your planning to do headers and exhaust.

The only cats that can really get clogged in a 6thgen or altima is the pre cats in the headers so only way is to either get brand new ones or buy aftermarket headers.

So this issue has nothing to do with the fuel system right? Cleaning it with Seafoam wouldn't change anything?

Yes. Make sure there is no soot around the gasket on the flange.

Ok so basically unscrew it from the upper intake manifold and also from the exhaust?

Will there be enough play to move it around or do I have to completely uninstall it to check it?

After the flange I should check the whole pipe also right?

Yes. The catalytic converter "filter" material breaks down and can be drawn into the engine causing problems that you don't even want to consider. I don't know what kind of time frame you have from when your CEL comes on, to when you HAVE to replace them, but if you do find out that it is definitely clogged pre-cats, then I wouldn't chance it. Get them replaced.

Well I tried taking apart the EGR tube from under the hood only but there wasnt enough play by just removing it from the UIM. So I'll just wait untill I get the gaskets to fully remove it.

On the pre-cats, Is there anything I can do to verify that they are clogged?

There is a thread here showing what the clogged cats look like, but I can't find it right now. If you look into the cat, you'll see that the material is starting to break down and it will look like soot in the cat. If you were to turn the cat over and tap it, then some of the loose, soot-like material will fall out.

I got to taking off that EGR tube today and did notice some soot on it. So I ran some brake cleaner through the tube also a little bit to where it hooks up on the UIM and then the bottom part. I reset the light and I guess I will have to wait to see if it comes up again.

If the light does come back on, is the the Pre-cats the only other thing that could be setting off this code?

Hey another thing a friend of mine pointed out is that the EGR valve could be stuck open due to low voltage and lately my battery has been acting up. I wonder if that could have anything to do with it.

Default Re: Need Help With P1402 EGR System Code

if you look on top near the EGR theres a Male Plug, its the egr steppar motor I belive, you can unplug it and let the car idle and plug the OBDII scanner on it,

if the codes pull for EGR system , then you know that its working, which your friend mention about voltage, general they dont go bad , and if your battery was even on low, this wouldnt have any issues , you wouldnt be getting enough voltage to even fire the Coil-On-Packs thus you wouldnt even be able to start your car.

Here is a thread about the cats
