Default Need Help: Changing OEM Exhaust

Hey fellow members,

I AM A NEWBIE. I am new to modifications of cars. I currently drive a 2004 Nissan Maxima SE with Stock everything. I painted the wheels to gunmetal and the diffuser/grill to black, but other than that, I've done nothing to the car.

With my first mod, I want to make the exhaust sound louder. Something that sounds much like the G35. I also have a tight budget. ~$100-300. What should I do? Any inputs?

- PLEASE NO eBAY catback exhaust! I'm not the biggest fan.
- One of my buddies told me to custom exhaust with mandel bents and Magnaflow mufflers. (I'm assuming that means have the stock center resonator and rear mufflers removed, then purchase a round magnaflow muffler installed where the resonator was? ) Is this a cheaper way of doing it instead of purchasing a whole new exhaust system?

PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

For $300 you won't get magnaflows and custom bent piping, your best bet is remove the resonator and put a straight pipe, sounds very much like a g35 and will only cost you $30-$80

Any places or sites you can recommend to purchase straight pipes for the 04 Max?

I also plan on purchasing some mufflers due to the fact that the stock ones are starting to rust a bit. Any recommendations there to enhance the sound quality with the straight pipe?

Thanks.

Just go to your local exhaust shop and tell them to cut the resonator out and put a straight pipe in, they should have plenty of pipe in house.

I would still need some sort of muffler to go with the straight pipe, wouldn't I? I'm planning to toss the stock mufflers away due to little rusting.

Will putting in a straight pipe increase the drone of the car? Also, will it decrease its performance in any way?

I think you are confused. The straight pipe will replace your resonator, NOT your mufflers. The resonator is the large, triangular shaped can that runs front/back between the headers and the mufflers. It is located roughly under the front seats of the car...runs directly down the center of the car....You will have the resonator removed and a straight pipe welded in. The rest of the stock exhaust will NOT be touched.

Thats the exterior sound I'm really looking for. Thanks Kenny. I also did alot of research and it says that the drone increases at 2-3000rpm. Would know anything about this?

I understand. But regardless thanks for the clarification.

- Also, the straight pipe will be a 2.25" correct?

What's up guys I'm looking into asking the same question. I'm looking for a good exhaust system that will keep the dual tips on each side. Budget is not much of an issue ($500 to $1100). But I find it hard to find something nice. I have seen some of the guys here with some nice systems and would like some advise. If you can provide like a brand it would be great. Thanks to all

If budget isn't an issue I would talk to a shop. Get them to quote you some mandrel piping and find mufflers you like and ask for them. Then compare to what you find online.

As an update to this thread, I had my resonator deleted. However it did not do much at all to enhance the sound whatsoever. It's almost not noticeable. Luckily it was only $40 and 30 minutes of my life that was wasted. I didn't even bother putting up the sound clips because you will not be able to notice the difference from the before and after.

Next step for me will be to change my mufflers and hope that it will do something. Unsure to what mufflers to purchase as of now. Open to recommendations. Budget is: $80-100.

Default Re: Need Help: Changing OEM Exhaust

I've heard good things about these (If you like the blacked out look and considering you blacked your rims and grille you might):

Vibrant Performance ::.

Or these:

Magnaflow 14816 Street Series Polished Stainless Steel Oval Muffler with Tip : Amazon.com : Automotive

Personally, I'm planning on getting the Ebay catback and then switching the vibrants once I have more funds...IF you do it that way, it'll keep you in budget for the time being, give you some sound, and later just swap the mufflers! Win win....win
