Default BMW Exhaust Ideas on a Budget

Ok so a friend of mine just bought a 2003 330xi and wants to make it a little louder. I really have no experience with anything other than the Max so I really don't know what to tell him.

He's looking for something deeper and a little louder, but nothing insane...
He's also on a major budget (probably 300 max) so right now he's just looking at mufflers. I figured maybe swapping the resonator for a Magnaflow like I did might do something, but I really have no idea.

Without going cat-back what kind of options does he have on a small budget like this? I think he's probably screwed without dropping some pennies

either deleting the resonator or swapping mufflers would work to a small extent. id swap mufflers first. then when budget allows, cut the reso. then if budget allows, have a shop weld in some piping.

The first thing I think about when I hear BMW is "cha-ching"...

Nothing seems to be cheap. Has he gone on a BMW forum to see what other owners might have to offer?

You are right David. My father-in-law has a 97 525i that has had bad struts/shocks since he bought about a year ago. They run about $450 for the ones he wants, which are nucking futs! I told him, should've gotten a Maxima instead. I think that's the main reason I wouldn't buy a BMW.

Not trying to be a dick but maybe he should join a BMW forum where all the BMW snobs owners gather and ask there, just saying.

Tell him to save some more money and then ask on a BMW forum for the best info and deal. If all he wants is loud he can just cut off his mufflers. Not being a smartass intentionally but hard to word that differently.

"cheap" and "BMW" couldn't be farther from each other. Wrong type of car to try to mod on the cheap.

If he wants a new exhuast system he could go to the following:
http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp - Scorpion exhaust at $499.95
http://www.rogueengineering.com/bmw/RE_EX_E46_IKON.html - IKON exhaust for $550.00

or if he wants to buy more within his budget he could go ebay and get any one of the Bosal rear mufflers for about 300

Pretty sure the bosal is just an oe replacement, nothing performance about that one.

The thing about BMW's is the exhaust is complicated with bends and what not. If it was me, I'd start with a muffler, it'll probably make it quite a bit louder. since if i remember right the res's are pretty small to start with.

Gotta pay to play. If you can't pay, don't play. My 2 cents of course.

I would tell him to save his money until he can get a proper cat-back

#1 he owns a BMW ,so he shouldnt cut no corners.

#2 his mistake was buying a BMW on a budget.

i have a e46 bmw as well, i got a QTP (electric cutout exhaust) on mine and it was cheap to install and sounds insanely good, IMO thats what i would go for if hes on a budget, sometimes you can even find used QTP and save money
