Default Warning Regarding The RE5F22A Transmission

i would have posted this on fluids section but i want it to be seen more here in the general section

In the past topics came up on Auto Transmission fluids "can we use over the counter"
As in the ones i have posted back in the past
Synthetic ATF
Mobil 1 synthetic atf
Amsoil synthetic atf
Redline atf
Valvoline atf
They all have "suitable" for nissan 5 speed that calls for matic K
But beware i have done some research for over the few months

The RE5F22A TRANSMISSION requires a JWS3309 spec fluid
The JWS3309 requires fluid for slip lock configurations that includes specific friction modifiers.

THE JWS3309 is not listed in any of the fluids that claim suitable for matic K
So bottom line is go back to OEM if your on other fluids.

I have contacted amsoil and just asked them is your fluid JWS3309 compatible they confirmed that it is NOT but they still put Matic K as you can use it in the back of their bottle BEWARE.
I have tried all different fluids bottom line is use Matic K and nothing else

Some info on the transmission
Nissan code name RE5F22A
Fluid spec JWS3309
Built by Aisin Japan not Volvo as some members always said
Built in Anjo Japan So you have a american built car with a jdm trans.

Same transmission is used in
2006 Pontiac Torrent (GM code M09 (FWD), M45 (AWD))
2004 Chevrolet Equinox (GM code M09 (FWD), M45 (AWD))
2004 Saturn Ion (GM code M43)
20032005 Volvo XC90 2.5T engine only
20022008 Lancia Thesis
20022005 Opel Vectra C and Opel Signum
20022003 Saturn Vue V6
2003-2007 Saab 9-3 (GM code M09)
2004-2006 Nissan Maximas, Nissan Quest, Nissan Altima
2001-2007 Renault Laguna V6 and 2.2dci (code SU1)

You better get it from the dealer. Yes, they totally rip you off on the price, but I've had 3 people from my stealership tell me that my CVT warranty WILL be voided if I use any other fluid.

I had the Matic K Amsoil ATF in my '04 with the 5sp auto. Didn't have any transmission problems.

But this is good info!

Great info OwenMaxx. Thanks for sharing your research results. Right now I am using the Valvoline synthetic fluid and as much as the transmission shifts smooth with it, there is a problem that I noticed right after changing the fluid and although some might not feel it but I definitely can and that is: The braking function of the transmission is not working at all. for those who don't know what I am referring to. When you put your foot on the brake before the brake pads really struggle to stop the car, transmission uses the friction spec of the fluid to kill the speed first. The other problem that I noticed is that my car doesn't slingshot as it used to when I floor it.in other words the fluid doesn't have enough friction when it is supposed to. I even made a thread about this problem in Trans section and I wanted to thank OP for sharing his knowledge and also I wanted to let you guys and gals know that I found a JWS3309 spec fluid from Mobil 1. I bought a case of the fluid and I am going to flush my trans with it. it cost 70 bucks from amazon and below is the link to it. I am not a sales representative and I do not benefit neither from Amazon nor Mobil. I'm just a max owner who tries to find the most economical way to maintain his car.

Okay guys, I just did the change on the Mobil 1 ATF 3309 fluid change and I drained and refilled for 3 times using 9 quarts of fluid I end up saving almost 160bucks for trans fluid service which I am happy about, but what I am very happy about is that my transmission is back and it's working like before but smoother with the trans brakes working just like before and the shifts are smooth but with more definition than with the Valvoline fluid. Happily my fluid was not smelling burnt or anything and I don't push the car too hard, so as far as the problems that I mentioned in the previous post, they are gone now. Might be too early to say for sure but, I hope my happiness with the current state of the trans doesn't become short lived...fingers crossed

long story short Mobil 1 3309 works and it's almost half the price of matic K....and if you think about getting valvoline synthetic fluid, just don't , it is not going to work for you.
