Default Transmission Issue

Well I have an 04 SL, I believe its the 5 speed tranny cause when used in manual mode it has 5 speeds. Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways I took it to the dealer and had the 60,000 mile service done. After a month or so the tranny started shifting hard when going to drive to reverse and only when hot. It runs smoothly hot or cold. I checked the tranny fluid and its brown. Does this mean that I need the whole tranny rebuilt or can I do the valvebody fix? Thanks.

well youve reach that point where most 04 owners around 60K starts going ( if not sooner )

tranny fliuid is suppose to be red , if its brown thats not a good sign , adding a tranny cooler would have help before the issues but at this point in time , you may need to save up and invest into the valve body.

unless your still cover under warranty, but even then Nissan wont ever get it right unless you purchase a valvebody.

good luck

Thats what I'm wondering, is it still the valvebody or do you think the tranny is toast. Cuz I would rather upgrade the valvebody then spend 3500 at the stealership for a new tranny.

I honestly would say go with the new tranny. I had mine rebuilt, but I had to take it back to AAMCO twice! This transmission is not so good to rebuild, so I've read. When you put the new one in just make sure you change the oil every year/ 30K. I spoke to a specialist who insisted to do it that.

@NiZMo1o1 This is weird I asked the AAMCO mechanic, after having the tranny rebuilt, why the oil was a brownish color. He said it was, because they put some additive in it. Iono but if I see brown that means its a bad sign.

Up until owning a 6th gen , all my previous car never had a grade of tranny fluid.

but then again Ive only own 2 automatics cars ( 5th gen maxima, 6th gen maxima ) all my other cars were 5spd.

As stressed by my buddys that are TECH's at Nissan and Infiniti, that you should NEVER add any additives esp in the tranny fluids.

from my own experenice , everytime I check the tranny fluid, mines came out brown darkish and smell burnt.

and that lead to tranny failure

Yes but from what I have been reading it looks like the problem is the valvebody on the transmission that goes bad. Did anyone here who had problems with their tranny have brown looking fluid? If yes what did you do to fix the problem?

it is the valve body going , im just saying that you shouldnt use anything BUT K-Matic Nissan Fluids.

that is well beyond this point as your already suffering from the infamous valve body 3-2 shift shock.

as I said before if you still have coverage from Nissan's Warranty , then you better use it ,

if you dont , prepare yourself to save some money and get a new valve body and invest yourself into a transmission cooler.

at this point also , even if the fluid is red or brown or black , your still going to have mis-shifts and 3-2 bangs and reverse poping out with a hard bang.

its only a matter of time when the tranny will start getting worse

one more thing, have you check or replace the tranny mounts and motor mounts ? inspect those cause sometimes that could be the culprit but not always resolves the problem.

Thanks for answering my question. I do not feel any shifting issues at all while driving. The only problem is the delay from drive to reverse when the tranny is warm not cold.

Which is why I dont understand why the oil is brown especially since it was just changed 2000 miles ago with Kmatic fluid.

All services have been done at the dealer and warranty is gone.

I did check the mounts and they do need to be replaced. I took it to a tranny shop and they said to replace the tranny cuz the fluid is turning brown. But reading about the valvebody issue being the problem I would rather upgrade that if thats the real problem.

I don't think its suppose to be brown. I have never checked the fluid till now. Tranny fluid is suppose to be red but I know we are suppose to use the nissan kmatic fluid, so I don't know what color that is. Is Aamco using the kmatic fluid.

Just drain and re fill for now mine did that a while back at like 40k now I have 81k . You have to keep that fluid fresh thats the life line of a tranny just like oil is the life of your motor .

Does any one know if the rebuilding kit sold at level 10 can be used when your tranny is already bad or is it only to upgrade it before the tranny is bad. Thinking about getting it and having it installed locally.

search chernmax , I belive he has the level 10 upgrade and hes still having issues, altho he is putting alot of torque since hes turbocharged.

try contact my guys down here , www.atfspeed.com

ask for Jason and tell him Alan sent you , pick their brains and see what comes out of the bag before you make a decision.
