Default SES/CEL Came On Again Today

While I was sitting in the school parking lot waiting for my daughters, I noticed my SES light was on. I went straight to AutoZone and I pulled 3 codes. They were 2 P0174 codes, and 1 P0171 code. All three codes are for a lean condition. The last time the light popped, AZ was able to reset it, this time it would not reset. The car seems to be running fine. I'll be calling the stealership tomorrow for an appointment...

Did you try to reset the ECU?

Try to buy the portable code reader from autozone and reset the light yourself prior to taking it to the dealer. It might be a faulty code.. Happens from time to time :-/

Default Re: SES/CEL Came On Again Today

I tried resetting it with their scan tool, and it would not reset. I've got a NISMO cold air intake, NISMO catback exhaust, and Racingline High flow y-pipe. I also have the 2 degree timing advance done. The car has idled very rough ever since the dealer did the timing advance, I think I'm going to have them reset it to stock. I really don't have anything that should trigger a lean code. The bank 1 lean code popped right after I changed my battery a few mos. back, but AZ was able to reset it and it never came back.

Well dang that sucks. Hope the back to stock timing fixes the issue. If not then I wonder what else it could be...

Off topic, do any of you guys use FPR's (fuel pressure regulators) on your max? Is there a reason too?

Is your air filter clean?

I got a lean code with about the same mods but add the IM spacers after I added the Fujita CAI. Perhaps you are running a little lean with all the breather mods?

You have been running 93 in your max right?

I always have rich/lean codes, but that is due to headers and Y. I heard someone complaining about RL parts yesterday, maybe it has something to do with the Y.

The only way to reset ECM with scan tool is to use ConsultII. Below is the proper procedure to do it manually. Its tricky, and took me a few tries to get it, but now I have no problem. If you need to, use a stop watch and the trick is to press and release the gas pedal fully and very rapidly 5 times within 5 seconds....

1. Perform Accelerator pedal released position learn
2. Perform "Throttle Valve closed position learning
3. Start engine and allow to warm up to operating temperature
4. Make sure steering wheel is center, headlights, defogger all electric loads off. Vehicle in park
5. Turn Ignition "off" and wait 10 seconds
6. Confirm accelerator pedal is released, and turn ignition on and wait for 3 seconds.
7. Repeat the following procedure quicly 5 times within 5 seconds
a) fully depress the accelerator pedal
b) fully release the accelerator pedal
8. Wait 7 seconds and fully depress the accelerator pedal for approximately 20 seconds untill the "MIL" starts blinking then stops blinking and stays "on"
9. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the "MIL" turned on.
10. Start the engine and let it idle.
11. Wait 20 seconds
12. Rev up the engine 2 or 3 times to make sure idle speed and ignition timing is within specs.
13 If idle speed is not ok repeat the idle air relearn.

Dan,

What/How do I perform steps 1 and 2? This procedure is to reset the ECM and it is the idle air relearn, right?

Here ya go buddy

Accelerator Pedal released position learning:
1.Makes sure accelerator pedal is fully released
2. Turn ignition on and wait at least 2 seconds
3. Turn ignition on and wait at least 10 seconds
4. Turn ignition on and wait at least 2 seconds
5. Turn ignition on and wait at least 10 seconds

Throttle valve closed postition learning
1. Make sure that accelerator is fully released
2. Turn ignition on
3. Turn ignition switch off and wait at least 10 seconds

Dan,

I tried the procedure 3 times. I got to the flashing SES light, waited for it to go solid, released the pedal immediately, start the car and light is still on solid. All 3 times, same deal...any other ideas other than stealership?

I'm out, probably have to take it in. Rough idle could be motor mount (the front electronic one), I had timing advance for years, never cause problem. Could it be bad catalytic converter time?

That's the same procedure that Dan outlined above. I did it 3 times, but as soon as I start the car, the light came right back on . I didn't have any problems getting the SES into the diagnostic mode...the rest of the above procedure just didn't seem to reset the light.

I found this on one of the Xterra forums:

1.)turn the key to the on position (do not crank over the motor....dont start the engine)

2.) wait 3 seconds.... and then fully step on the gas and let go fully 5 times with in 5 seconds....
(ex. wait...3....stomp.stomp.stomp.stomp.stomp

3.)wait 6seconds....(not steppig on gas pedal)

4. FULLY PRESSS down on gas pedal and hold for about 10 seconds.

5.) the check engine light should be flashing.
should be flashing 10times and stop a few seconds and then 10 and stop.....etc.
6. hold down pedal again 10 secs.

7. release pedal.....turn key off.....

8...wait a few seconds and turn the motor on.....check engine light should be gone.

I just went out and tried that procedure...once the SES light started flashing, I let go of the gas pedal, waited a few seconds, and then held the pedal down again for another 10 seconds. Then I turned the key off, waited a couple of seconds and then I started the car. The SES light is off for now. I let the car idle for about 30 seconds, then I blipped the throttle. The SES light blinked with the throttle blip, I waited a few seconds and blipped the throttle again...the SES light blinked again with the throttle blip. I drove the car to the end of the street and back and the light is still off. I have to run out to KnuKonceptz after work tomorrow to pick up some wire...about 60 miles round trip...we'll see what happens.

I still have to make an appointment with the stealership for the ABS issue, so I may have hit it with the Consult to make sure everything is where it is supposed to be.

Well I'm glad you found something that worked for you. Hope it stays off for good this time. Oh, and I might be picking up a BIG 3 upgrade kit from you, sick of this slow windows and roof.

Glad that it worked out Don. One question just as a follow up. You stated that ever since Nissan did the +2 advance, the Max was running rough. With the ECU reset, it brought the ECM back to stock 15+-5 degreees BTDC. How is the MAX running now?
