Default P0780

Hi All,
I am posting to get help from the experience of Maxima owners and enthusiasts.

I am facing the well known jerks in shifting between 1-2, 2-1, 2-3, 3-2 and Neutral to Drive, Neutral to Reverse, etc. The problem is visible after the tranny is heated (driving 15-20 mins or so). The car was showing SES with code P0780 - Shift Malfunction. I took it to a tranny shop and they said the valve body has problems and they will order a reman valve body and rebuild the tranny. They also said if I take the risk and get them a valve body they can install it.

After researching on internet and reading posts by people with same problem I am a bit confused.

I came across few solutions:

1. Installing Transgo kit - I am not sure if it is complete solution to these issues or just a stop-gap arrangement. The kit + gaskets is costing $109 on ebay with free shipping. I do not know who can install it in my area.

2. Replacing the Valve body with a remanufactured one. I saw a DIY thread on this forum but I cannot do it. Maybe some of the transmission shops can do it for me. I found that I can get the valve body from levelten.com or valvebodyexpress or Sunbelt or even ebay. Not sure which one should be selected. What should be deciding factor. The valve bodies are ranging from $650 to $900 + installation

3. Option suggested by the transmission shop to replace the valve body and rebuild the transmission. Costing close to $3500-$4000

I need your advice and also some refernce for the suggested work to be done near Miamisburg, OH (45342)

Thanks in advance.
Shahzad

Might be the VB mate ! or oil levels also .

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty shifting solenoid valve
- Shifting solenoid valve harness is open or shorted
- Shifting solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection

Transmission oil is dirty. I will change this weekend. I saw the DIY thread and also found video on YouTube.

I've never had to deal with that SES light. But what I do, know is that the 6gen's trans a garbage. Damn sorry for your luck brah. Wish I could've helped more. I would say maybe Google the code.

There's nothing wrong with your tranny. The problem is the valve body. You either replace the solenoids in the vb of get an entirely new oem valve body. I had the same symptoms and code exactly three years on my 2006 SL at 96k miles. I got an oem vb and so far so good at 120k miles. Meanwhile I'd suggest you stop driving the car to save the transmission from damage.
There's a sticky on this in the other org. It has very current information on the solenoids option.

Thanks for the info. I am not driving the car a lot (1 mile to work twice a day so total 4 miles). I am planning to change the transmission oil. Service manual says Nissan Matic K. Valvoline MaxLife® DEX/MERC ATF is synthetic fluid and lists "Recommended for use where DEXRON, DEXRON II, III and VI, Toyota T-IV and WS, MERCON®, MERCON® SP and LV, Allison TES 389, Nissan Matic-D, Matic-J and Matic-K, Honda Z-1 (except CVT), Mercedes NAG-1, Mitsubishi Diamond SP-II and SP-III and many others are required."

Any suggestions if I should use the Valvoline MaxLife® DEX/MERC ATF in place of Matic K?

I can't see how the oil change will solve the problem. I suggest you stick to Matic K, but you need to attend to the vb first.

I am planning ATF change as I got it changed at around 65K at a local garage and I suspect that he did not use Nissan Matic K or equivalent. The problems have been coming on and off since then. It has now become frequent and the ATF is also dark.

Also as sprocketser also mentioned if Matic K is not used the car can give troubles

If changing ATF does not solve my problem then I will go for VB.

Do you mean that I should change the oil thrice. I was planning to do twice within a week but I will do thrice as suggested.

Sadly I think your rite man. If they did use the wrong ATF I think the damage is already done. But definitely, attend to the VB.

Yeah. I will change the ATF with Matic K this weekend and see how it goes. Will keep everyone posted on this thread.

Meanwhile where is a good place to get VB from? Any suggestions

No need. The vb of the 5speed 6th gen invariably goes bad anything from 60k miles. Yes, ensure you have the right fluid all right and have it drained at about 10k intervals afterwards.
