Default Need A New CAT

Wassup fellas

I had a check engine light and it came up as me needing a new CAT. which costs around 800 dollars. I talked to my boy and he said to remove the cat. Will there be any problems? Also if i buy a catback will it resolve the issue? what are possible solutins? thanks in advance

No a catback will not resolve it. Look into the Racing Line y-pipe. I think you can add an extra cat and it will cost around 800.00.Then buy a catback you will be in heaven...

Which cat was bad? The one in the y-pipe is not detected or has a sensor.

Getting a "cat-back" is not a solution because it only goes from the cat to the mufflers in the back.. Hence the name "cat-back".

The only cats that get measured are the ones in the front and the back of the engine, not the one underneath.

When yu say "i think you can add an extra cat" yu mean an extra cat comes with the y pipes? or getting an aftermarket cat? i hear the aftermarket cats are garbage

Deadbolt has a good point. Which one is it? If its one of the ones on the Ypipe Im not sure its even an issue. Ive heard people here in Cali. can pass emissions with a Racingline y-pipe with only one cat. If you need to have the extra one adding another cat with that y-pipe is an option. I think the website is www.racingline.com

Our cars have 3 cats. 1 in the front of the engine, 1 in the back of it and one in the y-pipe.

If you have a check engine light, then it's either the front or the back one.. The one in the y-pipe is NOT detected or measured.

Check with your mechanic and find out which one is bad

Have someone check your engine codes. I think it MIGHT tell you, but i'm not 100% on that. The front sensors are the only ones that throw codes, but the rear sensors send a signal to the front sensors when they have problems.

Someone back me up on this? It's been awhile since I messed with my O2's

You can either get a set of headers and take out the cats completely or replace that cat. It all depends on what plans you have for your car.

Also how many miles are on your car?

yes that will help. its either headers, hi-flow cats, or just gut out the cat itself.

most likely your PRE-CATS are clogged,

the 2nd cats usually the o2 wideband goes bad.

if you go with the racingline route, will you have issues with Emissions in your state ?

If the precats are your problem [the one infront & behind your engine], then get racingline high flow precats -- you'll pass emissions and wont get a check engine light with them.

You can also get headers but then youll have a check engine light and to resolve that you gotta get some o2 simulators.

If the cat under the car [the one on the y pipe] is the issue then get a racingline y pipe [does not come with a cat but you will still pass emissions] or go catless.

oh and since your car is registered in jersey, remember that jersey only has emission inspections now. so if you go headers and remove the cats all together you might run into a issues with inspection unless you get a o2 simulator.

btw what transmission do you have? 4 spd, 5 spd, 6 spd? cause you can go a cheap route and get the ebay headers ($190). but if you have a 5 spd you need to shave the alternator a lil so it fits properly.

ok well the code will tell you exactly which one is bad it should say something like B1S1 or B2S2
the sensors are put into bank 1 or bank 2 and than sensor 1 or sensor 2
Bank one is the front bank two is the back. sensor 1 is the pre-cat sensor 2 is the standard cat.

I have stock cats with 20k on them if you want they are in perfect condition

^^^ ya that would be good especially at high mileage. i was thinkin of going ebay headers cause i can't spend 500-700 for precats/cattman headers. but ya if u need to get ur codes checked you can go to autozone they do it for free. if they don't tell u what cat is bad u can just look the code up on the internet
