I suppose you could try changing the transmission fluid and see if anything improves.

If the owner before you was honest enough to tell you it needed a new transmission, then it probably does. That is why he sold it to you at such a bargain.

It still may turn out to be a bargain if all it needs is the transmission.

Good Luck.

For sure when i got my max the guy told me it was a kick from first to sec and it end up being a crack wire that was going to the valve body resister that was making it do that, so just take it to someone you trust and let them check it is what i did and look crack wire my mechanic didnt take advantage and he had the change to tell me it was something that was much more money.

P.S By the way how much did you pay for it leather no leather, SE or SL 4speed,5speed or 6speed ?

Because the tranny is still cold. Once it warms up it doesn't feel as bad.

As stated, I would check the motor and transmission mounts first. Then I would have a reputable transmission shop check into replacing the valve body. There are quite a few guys who were diagnosed as having a bad transmission that were able to change the valve body and it solved the problem.

I had the same exact problem on my 4th gen. It turned out to be the motor mounts.

Start with the mounts first. They are a big part when trying to diag shift issues. Hard shifts that only occur when the car is fully warmed up are signs of a bad valve body. If your mounts are good but still have the shifting issues then I would replace the valve body before having the whole transmission rebuilt. Use the search feature and look around, this is a very common issue for 6th gen maximas.
